Indonesian city bans women from straddling motorbikes

A city in Indonesia’s Islamic law stronghold of Aceh will ban women from straddling male drivers on motorbikes, its mayor said on Wednesday, dubbing the position “improper”.

The move comes after leaders from the country’s only province ruled by strict sharia law drafted a series of new bills including banning women from wearing tight trousers, stoning adulterers and flogging homosexuals.

Ya know what? Let's strive for strict separation of church and state. Let's not turn a blind eye to the removal of a single brick from Jefferson's Wall.

Choosing to engage in a dangerous activity is a bit different than being required to do so.

I particularly like the fact that only dad is wearing a helmet while the wife and kid (in daddy's lap) go without.

But I guess that could happen straddling the bike in a long dress also. Wear pants and straddle. It could be a slogan!

separation of Church and State as we claim to.

Even here, that wall is looking more than a little ragged. It is a pity. That separation was designed to protect religion and the individual right to worship, or not, as one sees fit.

There is nothing as corrosive to individual liberty as a Theocracy.

Indonesia offers a good example of why we need to fight to keep separation strong here and to avoid even the slightest dismantling of the wall.
