Today is one of those days.

I knew SCOTUS would use this case to beat the Voting Rights Act to within an inch of its life but I did not anticipate the disgust I feel about the decision. It's right up there with the 2024 election and for that reason I don't even want to follow anymore political news today.

1. Decided by the corrupt and extremist majority of the SCOTUS.

As soon as Dems regain sufficient power, they must expand SCOTUS and appoint reasonable people. By that time, if we're lucky, they can replace Alito and Thomas too.

15. I'm certainly not an authority on our federal constitution,

… but I respectfully have to disagree. I don’t think there is anything in our constitution that prevents Congress from including a provision in a law that it passes that specifically states that this law is exempt from court review. The fact that it isn’t done is a self-imposed restraint by Congress.
I’m hoping that someone more knowledgeable in this area will weigh in on the accuracy of my assertion.

There is actually nothing in our federal constitution that specifically grants the court the power of judicial review. “It is implied by the notion of a written constitution and the rule of law.” (See linked reference). It is a power that the court granted itself (Marbury v Madison, 1803).

Day after day after day, the atrocities never stop. It's too much. Every evening, I tell myself tomorrow will be a TFD (Trump free day), and yet my need to be informed leads me to DU and other credible sites.

There is so little blow back, so little accountability. It is disheartening. It takes a toll. The country I have loved all my life is being destroyed before my eyes.

Taking a break to protect your peace and to fortify is good self care.

Hang in here everyone.

It serves no purpose at this point to blame those who voted 3rd party or stayed home, but this IS a lesson going forward that presidential elections are also about the Supreme Court.

We would be in a very different place if Hillary was elected and appointed three Supreme Court Justices instead of you know who.

Yes, in the sense that the Republican Party is ruled by a treasonous kleptocrat tearing the US Constitution to shreds.

However, One Party rule in principle is not a good system -- though at this time it is necessary to save the US from the evils of authoritarianism.

Nor has the Two Party system served us well. At the very least, I would like to see Instant Runoff (ranked choice) voting to ensure voting for a 3rd party candidate does not put your last choice in office.

Other necessary reforms include ending gerrymandering altogether; stop voter suppression in all forms while ensuring secure and accurate tabulation of ballots; eliminating the Electoral College; and end the system of legalized bribery inherent in campaigns financed by billionaires, corporations, and other special interests.
