New York needs a Jewish parade, not an Israel parade

This year, many Jews are furious that Mayor Mamdani will likely skip the event, despite having marched in other groups’ parades. Others are waiting, anxious, to see which extremist Israeli ministers will show up to mug for the cameras. Protesters are presumably planning disruptions, and the police are preparing to prevent any such disruptions.

But these concerns miss the real problem with the Israel Day Parade: It has become a litmus test, pressuring Jews essentially to sign on to the Israeli government’s agenda in order to participate in mainstream communal Jewish life, while also reducing New York Jews to a single aspect of Jewish identity, namely, a connection to another country. Rather than unite New York Jews, it doubles down on the most politicized and contentious issue dividing Jewish communities.

What if, instead, we organized a Jewish heritage parade that showed off the full vibrancy and diversity of New York Jewish communities? There would be bands performing in Hebrew, Yiddish, Bukharian, Judeo-Arabic, Ladino, Juhuri and English, and playing the tsimbl, oud, tambourine and krar. Persian singers would ululate while cantors on guitar lead camp songs. Marchers could wear traditional Jewish dress from Georgia, Greece, India and Syria.

Full of far right people and that is one of the most popular Israeli media site. No surprise when a bunch of far right people don’t like a progressive person. What’s surprising is liberals supporting a far right country and the far right comments they are making against a progressive Rabbi.

Because in about a week Tel Aviv is going to host the largest Pride event in Asia while every country around them will arrest people if they try to celebrate.

Respect and celebrate the Jewish religion, but FUCK Netanyahu and his little poodle tRump.

Why are we sending billions to prop up his government when Americans right here can't get the health care and abortions they need?

For 250 years Jews and Muslims have lived in overwhelmingly peaceful coexistence in the US for 250 years, the problems between them in the US started very recently - like the October 7th bombing, and Trump's rise using divisive rhetoric. Congrats for sharing Trump's POV.

Islam is a proselytizing religion. Read their scripture. That doesn't mean that Muslim and Jewish people don't get along, but a shared parade is absurd. Why not a Catholic/Jewish parade...or any other two cultures?

Your comparison of me to Trump is insulting.

Because Israel “has” to exist for the End Times to occur. Jews are then condemned to Hell for all Eternity. Very friendly and embracing-worthy, dontcha think?

Cause I've shown where Jewish people treat Christians like shit? All I can say is what the fuck is that? I'm a god damn Atheist, I don't support any of that crap. What kind of fucking argument is that? The claim was Islam doesn't respect Judaism and I show a video where Judaism doesnt respect Christianity to counter that and you say Evangelical Christians are bad as well? Well fuck then all of the religions can fucking hate each other and commence a world encompassing war to figure out which god loves them the most and all the rest of us that thinks they are all shit can just sit around twillding our thumbs. Get the fuck out of here with that shit. I am so totally tired of that and done with being nice about it.

Jews do not seek to convert people to their religion. The attitude is basically "live and let live." Scripture, which the Jewish people do not follow literally has an injunction against paganism - being one of the original monotheistic religions.

Evangelical Christians support Israel in order to hasten the end of times - not because they see Judaism as a viable religion.
Just what were those particular Christians praying for? Maybe the gathering of all Jewish people to Israel to hasten their demise?

It’s wild how Bezalel Smotrich was there, just hanging out, uninvited yet participating, anyway.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu of the far-right Otzma Yehudit.

The participation of the far-right lawmakers had not been announced in advance. The Jewish Community Relations Council said ahead of the parade that it was unaware who from the Israeli government would be attending, and the Israeli consulate in New York did not include Smotrich or Eliyahu on its list of expected participants.

The parade’s theme this year was “Proud Americans, Proud Zionists.”

Various communities around the city hold annual parades, and the Israel march serves as the Jewish community’s de facto annual public event.
