General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just donated to Graham Platner's campaign.
I'm not even from Maine.
Know why I did it?
Because I want Susan Collins to lose.

It helps if you know what you are talking about.

(242 posts)Now, is the insignia of the Imperial KuK 1. Lieb Hussaren Regiment (unit established in 1741) a specifically Nazi symbol, or not?
How about the Iron Cross (established 1813)?
Or the Pour le Merite (established 1740)?
Also never a member of the NSDAP.
Oooops.
Just stop.

(513 posts)While showing up to Nazi events and having Hitler over for his birthday party.
You need to "just stop"
RetiredParatrooper
(242 posts)To review, you just conceded that von Mackensen wasn't a member of the NSDAP, and that none of those symbols are specifically Nazi. He was, like many monarchists of the time, used by the new people in power as a powerful symbol which, given his success as a commander in WWI, made him useful.
Best you move on.
Boo1
(513 posts)You should make sure to be right. And I conceded nothing.
If you go to nazi events, you ARE a nazi.
BTW the swastika wasnt a nazi symbol until they made it one. Would you see one today and say that it's not?

Usually, these are sanctimonious people who never have anything good to say about Democrats, and for whom winning elections is strictly a TERTIARY concern. Very low priority. The ideological purity is all that matters. Losing is fun, and it feels good when it's done right, seems to be the mantra.
To be clear, I've read some great takes from those who oppose Platner on principle, which I do actually respect. This isnt about them.
And while I can't claim to be a Platner enthusiast, I am an avowed hater of Susan Collins. So she needs to go. And I'd donate money to a ham sandwich if I thought it could beat Collins.

All I want is for Susan Collins to lose. I want to go to bed at night and know that her troubled, concerned, unprincipled and contemptible face won't be a problem in 2027.

(173,204 posts)I usually have a long Ignore list but occasionally I clear it all - and almost immediately I see the same names with the same fly-under-the-radar posts.
That being said, I'm still astonished at the choices here, very dismal indeed

(101 posts)against Collins? She was squeaky clean really, maybe some financial questions about her husbands business dealings, but nothing other than that. She easily won the Dem nomination and lost to Collins in the general by 9%.
Platner, warts and all, for the win!

(10,455 posts)... up until the only one that mattered (https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/senate/general/2020/maine/collins-vs-gideon).
If Collins could overcome anywhere from a one point to 12-point deficit in the polls against a "squeaky clean" candidate, you think she will easily lose to someone that seemingly has a new scandal pop up each week?

(9,657 posts)But ya know what? He's going to win the primary.
The MAGAts do not care about their candidates' flaws. They will elect that porange piece of shit or Concerned Collins. If we play the play the "candidate isn't good enough" game, we will will lose. It killed Harris' chances in 2024. It'll kill us now.
Time to focus on the forest, rather than the trees. I won;t try to defend his flaws. I'll just say "So what?" He'll beat Concerned Collins, and THAT is what matters.
Support Platner, flaws and all.

(17,661 posts)If he is relatable to men whose identity tends toward a manhood more like earlier generations, its not a bad thing to have that representation somewhere in the partys big tent.
As a mother of a teen boy a decade ago, I remember feeling that US culture was really lacking for boys. Hard to explain exactly but the compliance and obedience training of grades 1-12 is way too much.
Will he be brave in his arguments to recover America? We need that.
We certainly do NOT need Susan Collins.
