Very sad

(77,409 posts)...I can't find much sympathy either.
I don't believe his neighbor about the victim's willingness to let other have their opinions.
The displays were ostentatious & provocative and the guy was looking for an argument in a grand fashion. Keep shoving his opinion in others' face and he was bound to get his argument.
Unfortunately, he found an argument with a crazy and it got him killed.
I guess I sympathize with the wife. She certainly didn't deserve widowhood like this.
But, I honestly don't care about the guy, undeserved death notwithstanding.

(77,409 posts)I said the killer was crazy to have acted like this.
I never said I approved.
In fact my post title says the exact opposite.

(77,409 posts)I think the attacker is out of his mind & a murderer.
Have no idea how you got that I promote violence.
I just don't care about this particular guy.

(26,598 posts)you condoned the murder. I was only expressing how I feel about it.
ProfessorGAC
(77,409 posts)Of course, there is the assumption that the attack was politically motivated.
It may not have been but the attacker still killed a guy in a fight, including aggravating circumstances.
One can't head stomp someone unless they are already down & defenseless.
The attacker is in big, big trouble.

(3,125 posts)the question would be, why would someone not have sympathy for a murder victim? He was living his own life and did nothing to provoke such levels of violence. Frankly, I have sympathy for anyone in the victims case. Who they voted for or what kind of tacky garbage they decorate their property with is not the switch that flips my sympathy on or off, so I have to ask the question.

(1,610 posts)I dont condone political violence- (even though I have been very tempted to do it myself, my better angels have prevented action, so far) - but we dont know for sure from this if the victim was attacked for his Drumpf support or some other reason or if he started the fight. This was Fux News so you can assume half of the story is missing and the other half misleading.

(15,645 posts)A guy like that doesn't know how to back down, and if he got in the face of someone who had made an offhand negative comment or he thought "didn't belong" and that person was already pissed or had an aggressive response reaction, a fight would not be unlikely.
Curb-stomping is not an unheard of reaction by bullies or gang members who grew up like Kegsbreath or the Proud Boys - where beating the crap out of anyone who offended you is the mark or a privilege of "virile Manhood".
On edit, it's not that I'm making an excuse, but this isn't the first time this sort of crime has occured.
The only reason this is making the news is because the guy was a local controversial personality.
When a drunk uncle decides to do a beat down on an uppity YA nephew who "disrespected" him at a block party and curb stomped the young man into the hospital in a coma with a severe concussion, cracked shoulders and upper back spine damage, it doesn't make the news.

(22,874 posts)And if he was stomped on the head it was not self-defense.
It was murder, regardless of the reporting source.

According to documents filed in family court last year, Butlers wife said that Butler had been the subject of multiple domestic violence calls, welfare checks by police and various mental health cases between February 2020 and February 2025. Those alleged incidents do not appear to have resulted in any criminal charges in San Diego County, according to a search of court records.
According to military records reviewed by the Union-Tribune, Butler left the Navy as a surface warfare specialist with multiple achievement and good conduct medals in 2023 after serving 12 years. In September 2020, Butler and his wife purchased a home on Magnolia Avenue, a few blocks from Sherons house, according to property records.
Butler registered as a Republican in April 2025 and voted in the Republican primary in 2024, according to county voter registration records. In the 2020 presidential primary, he voted as no party preference.

(33,562 posts)Having PTSD is no excuse to punch a 69-year-old man in the face and then kick him in the head twice when he's on the ground.
I hope he's charged with either 2nd degree Murder, or Manslaughter.
