Most of the media pictures are of the beachfront properties.......all owned by millionaires. Where are the pictures and commentary about the citizens living a mile back that were devastated? You won't see a lot of them. Oh sure, there have been some pictures, but not a lot.
To be fair, my cousins lived that mile back. On slightly higher ground, no less, but their homes were destroyed. And 67 Repugs voted against the relief for these hard working people??????
Well fuck them. I have no sympathy for the beach front property owners whose property is probably a second property .......not eligible for most types of insurance. They can afford to rebuild. Can't say that for the thousands living just a couple of thousand yards off the beach.
Rant over

(115,677 posts)I do agree that many people of lesser means had serious damage and destruction and voting against relief is wrong.
I am just asking about your assertion that beachfront properties are second homes owned by millionaires. I don't have a dog in this fight, but just wondering if that is true. Thanks and best wishes to your, and my, cousins who have been denied assistance.

(16,199 posts)The homes were pricy, with many from $400 to $700K, but a lot are purchased before the modern run up or have been in the families for decades. I know someone who makes $50 a year who owns one, inherited from her mother. She has no mortgage but pays nearly one in taxes. Nice beachfront house though!

(115,677 posts)millionaire. From living on the west coast I have friends who live in places that were in family for generations and are having problems paying the rising taxes. Sounds like the person you know also.
I am sure there are a lot of very rich people and second homes, it is just when it is presented as they ALL are that I get twitchy.

(31,158 posts)in NJ, those are the towns I'm very familiar with. I grew up in the town west of them. I admit That I am biased.......but ocean front property should not be private, controlled by beach front owners. That's the reality in those 2 towns.
And yes, those ocean front homes are owned by millionaires, or those close enough to pay their taxes. My parents were lucky enough to inherit a house in Bay Head, well west of the RR tracks for those of you who know the area. They've been long gone, but their former house was totally destroyed by Sandy as was my cousins. Anyone see any pictures of any Cape Cod house that was inland that was destroyed???? Maybe a couple of images, but that's about it..
My point, other than the rant ? The MSM continually shows aerial photos of the "suffering" that only represents the 1 percent, not the working people.
Oh.....and by the way......Fuck all the 67 house of reps that voted against Sandy relief. Most beach front owners are not eligible, but my cousins are damn are.
Fuck the Repugs
OK........now my rant is really over
