I tend to think DU members are at least a little bit better versed in history than most. "Most", it would seem, have little knowledge of the makings of the world in which they live and it is my opnion that it leaves them with no concrete understanding of their position in today's world, let alone their own community.
That thought provoked the question, tell me about your reading in history

(11,804 posts)I regularly read history, but it probably comes in second place behind sci-fi/fantasy.

(31,849 posts)At any given time, I'm somewhere engaged in 4-5 books - 1 historical (anything that caught my fancy at the bookstore), 1 African-American Historical, 1 biographical (though that might fall in the historical category), all to broaden my knowledge base, and 2 pure fiction (of the Court-room genre ... Grisholm is my favorite), just to escape the day to day.
So while I read a fair amount of historical material, I would not say it's me favorite.

(47,992 posts)Fingerpost, or Grapes of Wrath, but, even though a period portrait of a time and it's people and culture, is the point of fictionalized history, I did not count that genre as an example consistent with your poll question about reading History.

(3,557 posts)The history stuff I do read is mostly history of science sort of stuff right now. I'm a chemist and I've really found that my scientific knowledge is really complimented by a history of where it all came from.
I went on a phase where I read about WWII history. I never really found myself too interested in the war aspect, but mostly the social issues surrounding the war and German society at the time.
I read a lot of articles from a magazine/journal "Foreign Affairs" and National Geographic. I really enjoy that a lot.
