GOP Rep. proposes $300 million in cuts to Hurricane Sandy relief

When super storm Hurricane Sandy ripped through much of the north-eastern United States, homes were destroyed and lives were lost. Despite the ideological differences between liberals and conservatives, most Americans agreed that the federal government should play a room in assisting those who were affected by the storm. While the majority of Americans support federal aid going to the victims, some Republicans in congress see things differently.

Leading the charge in congress is Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), who has proposed eight different new amendments, two of which would cut over $300 million from Hurricane Sandy relief. According to the Hill, the two main amendments proposed by Broun would remove nearly $20 million from study for future flood risks as well as eliminating $3 million from research dedicated to oil spills.

Rep. Broun has found himself in controversy before, making a name for himself in 2012 after he referred to the scientifically accepted theory of evolution as a lie "straight from the pit of Hell." Broun has argued that "creationism," the idea that the Bible's story of the earth being only a few thousand years old, was the only real possibility of how the earth was created. Broun's comments created such a stir that Charles Darwin, the 19th Century naturalist and the man who brought evolution to light, received over 4,000 write in votes against Broun in November's election.

On Monday, the House Rules Committee will decide which, if any, of the amendments will make it to the House floor for a vote.
