If Republicans wish to take the side of people-killing assault weapons, then let them....

If they are so far out of touch that they refuse to do anything to stop the killings - like the ones in Connecticut that killed 20 Kindergarten children - then let them take that message to the people in the next election. Democrats should not be afraid to take on the radical elements of the NRA and the Republican Party as an issue for the people to decide in 2014.

In nearly every poll that has been taken, the extremists are in the majority viewpoint in none of them. People want something done about assault weapons, no matter if it is simple registration of all gun sales or mental tests to show a person is stable enough to own a gun, but they do not accept that nothing should be done.

It is not about gun "control" - it is about gun violence and our children dying at the point of weapons of war. They have no place upon our streets and if the Republicans wish to make this a political issue, then so be it.

On many issues - what their base wants is really out of step with what a Majority of Americans want. But their base has shown itself (unlike the Democratic base i'm afraid) as more the capable of punishing their candidates if they aren't catered too. So the either piss of their base and run those risks, or they piss of the centrists/moderates/ normal Americans and run those risks.

An uncomfortable situation, not one that can last for too long, I would think.

Since it's estimated that the Obama proposals would reduce the current death toll of about 41,000 people by half, what about making a deal with the repubs. We go ahead and enact the legislation, in exchange for which each republican congress member is allowed to kill 72 constituents per year.

Many people would have to move, but the NRA leadership would be happy with the body count and those who vote republican I am sure would be willing to do their patriotic duty (as they always do).

On edit: Double Extreme
