Do You Know Any Republican Public School Teachers?

I want to see what my DU friends have to say since I was wondering about this today. I am a senior in high school, and I live in county in PA that voted for President Obama narrowly in 2008, but in 2012, Romney won it by 17% (mostly because of the propaganda going around about Obama's "War on Coal&quot . Nevertheless, despite how the region voted, the overwhelming majority of teachers voted for the President. Still, there were very few that not only supported Romney, but are traditional Republicans.

I'm curious to know the mindset of public school teachers that vote Republican - especially in states like my home state of PA where we have a GOP governor who has really hit public education hard.

2. A friend from high school teaches mathematics for high school and college students down in Arizona.

He was a good guy, a friend, very likeable, great sense of humor, and, if I were to assess his personality from then using my adult-age perception, a sweet guy, too.

A while back I read a book he had recommended to me way back in high school, but had not had a chance to read until now. I liked it very much, found him on Facebook, and sent him a message to thank him for his recommendation, even if 25 years in the past. He friended me, and I got a look at his profile. Yep, conservative Republican.

I started seeing some of his unhinged posts in the wake of the deaths in Benghazi, and started to wonder what had happened to the great guy I used to know. I also wondered how he could teach public school and be a Republican at the same time. Repukes make no bones about despising public school teachers. It just doesn't make any sense.

Michelle Rhee herself claims to be a liberal Dem, though 90 percent of candidates Students First endorsed were repukes.

3. I know a few of them

and the thing is, they're blind to their own hypocrisy else they wouldn't be pukes. The republican motto is everything public is bad, unless they need it personally, then it's good, but only for them and theirs. You have to use the reptilian part of your brain if you want to begin to understand their reasoning

4. Yes. Our school district seems to seek them out.

My son had an honors course in political science taught by a full blown right winger. You should have seen her writing assignments and the way she graded those who expressed progressive views. He also had a foreign language teacher who lectured the class on why we need "English only" legislation, went on a rant about the "war" on Christmas and accused students of being unpatriotic when she wrongly accused them of not saying the pledge of allegiance. (She was out of the classroom at the time). I heard that particular teacher has been fired and as of last week there was still a Romney/ Ryan sign in her front yard.

Our school district also invited (then) Senator Rick Santorum to speak to high school students about science when one of my children attended. When a brave student dared to ask a question about the Iraq War they had the microphone ripped away from them. Did I mention how glad I am that I no longer have children in the school system?

and she, of course, has never joined the Union.

8. My favorite teacher from jr high is a teabagger

He's one of the reasons I studied history in college. Found him on FB and it's all "socialists", "no taxes", "no govt regulation". Sad really. He teaches high school history and is a football coach now. Never thought the man that introduced me to the Pixies and Joy Division would end up like that...

9. The guy I share a classroom with is one.

I blew his mind one year when I let slip that we are government employees. Even Republican teachers aren't immune to not seeing that they are in the system they claim to despise.

I don't talk politics with him, except to try to get him more interested in our union. He's a good teacher, we share duties and enjoy hanging out and talking about our jobs. He's just not into the Democratic party for whatever reason. It's funny since we agree on several issues, he just thinks the root causes are totally different from what I think.

10. My daughter's Father-in-Law

Retired NYC Social Studies teacher, who raised 3 children, 2 of whom are also teachers (including my NYC PS teacher son-in-law), ALL who are DEMOCRATS.

Holiday time is a delight. ALL the kids jump on Daddy's case when politics are discussed.

12. Almost all of my teachers from 4th grade on up

Before that I was in a Montessori school, so not so much there, but from 4th grade on I was in a small town in Mississippi and the teachers come from the local population. I think the drama teacher and my French teacher were pretty liberal (for a small Mississippi town), but other than that, yeah, pretty much Republican. A lot of them hated AFT, too, and made no bones about that.

is a hardcore teabagger -- Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Fox fan.

The ironic, scary thing is: she teaches science!!!

We "unfriended" before the last election as we could find no common ground.

They work with my husband. They are good people, but really stupid when it comes to politics. And like all repukes, they vote against their own best interests and don't even realize it.

I can't wrap my head around that one. Is he deluded into thinking that "Repugs hate all unions except ours?" He may be a gun nut who's convinced Obama's gonna take away his arsenal and that's more important than job security. Sigh.

16. I knew of two at my kids' school.

One would argue that it wasn't fair that Portland and Eugene got to decide elections in Oregon because "the rest" of the state votes R. Apparently she thinks having acreage in the sticks entitles you to have your vote count more than people who live in higher-density areas. She has since retired. The other one was finally kicked out of the school after assaulting students on several occasions. He has extreme anger/control issues -- no wonder he is a Republican.

18. Almost everyone I work with...

Which is why I have lurked here on a daily basis since 2006. I live in an extremely red area of a blue state. The only two definite Democrats I have ever worked with (in 30 years in a public elementary school) have retired. Everyone I've ever heard "declare" themselves at my school is a Republican. As a reserved person by nature as well as a diehard Dem, I find my workplace exceptionally lonely and depressing. Oddly, no one ever balks at the raises or improvements to working conditions negotiated by our union.
