James Taylor: Rove/GOP Reopening wounds of Civil War for political base & to hide political agenda

In an interview with Charlie Rose, musician James Taylor issued a harsh rebuke to many aspects of the United States political system — and Karl Rove, in particular.



“To me, the Founding Fathers are the dream and the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln are where the rubber hits the road. That’s where this country sort of manifests it and that’s where the division manifested. And we still suffer from those divisions of the Civil War. We are still fighting the Civil War, I think. And there are people who, to their discredit, there are people who mine and encourage us to refight the Civil War. They find political strength from doing that. I’m talking about Karl Rove here. Reopening those wounds of the Civil War for political base and to hide their political agenda, which is elitist, which you can’t sell to a whole bunch of people because it doesn’t benefit them.”

Issues are just a weapon to be used against your opponent in order to get more numbers. They are never a means of educating people or of finding common ground.

When people spit out the word "politics" as though they're spitting out cyanide, they're thinking (whether they realize it or not) about people like Karl Rove.

Rove's most important contribution to the diabolical Republican strategy is to have the unmitigated gall to (repeatedly) attack the opposition for the very things that Rove's side is most guilty.

It's not simply sub-conscious projection, but at its deepest level it is a conscious strategy to nullify the right wing's most vulnerable weaknesses by creating a meme that falsely accuses opponents of precisely those traits.

And, over and over again, they have received the benefit of the corporate media, and now even NPR, accepting those false memes.

After creating the emotionally powerful false image of a "elitist left" which is re-iterated by the punditry, working class and middle class Republican voters are inoculated against the grim reality of the elitist agenda of the GOP, and of their own victimization.




If we are to defeat RW forces before they consolidate their overwhelming economic power to create a neo-feudal society, it is of prime importance that we reverse the RW's control of the language and semantics of political discourse.

The right wing has been doing this kind of thing for decades, and it has taught its followers the habit of projection. It promotes the opposite of one of the keys to maturity and good mental health - the ability to see and assess oneself honestly, as others see them. It's too easy to turn negative attributes to others that one has within oneself, and try to change them.

There are so many layers of dishonesty within the right wing and the GOP that it's hard to keep up.

He would easily win Kerry's old seat, should he be confirmed.
Scott Brown should not have that seat at all.

Taylor also revealed that he spent a week "very seriously considering" whether to seek the Democratic nomination for the seat soon to be vacated by U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who is expected to be confirmed as the next secretary of state later this month.

The suggestion was floated by WAMC Northeast Public Radio president and political commentator Alan Chartock in a recent Berkshire Eagle column.

"It was a hugely generous, very gratifying thing that Alan suggested that I might be considered as a candidate," said Taylor. "I did take it seriously for a while and talked to friends about it, but ultimately, I decided that I'm doing what I'm meant to do.

That Chartock gets to many of us who listen to him. I listen to WAMC each and every day. It's like my religion! I've been a member of the station for many years as well.

I still think that JT should run... He would win hands down!
