Father of black teen ‘horrified’ by attack; three white teens charged with hate crime

The father of a Brother Rice High School student who was the victim of an alleged hate crime was stunned when his son told him about the incident.

Three teenagers, including a fellow Brother Rice student, were charged with a hate crime after attacking 17-year-old Joshua Merritt at a home on the South Side in December — putting a noose around his neck, threatening him with a knife and calling him a racial epithet, police said Wednesday.

“I was really horrified something like that still goes on, and someone who was his friend would do that,” William Merritt Jr. said Thursday.

The accused all are white — ranging in age from 16 to 18 — and Joshua Merritt is black, police said.
