I must be a DU anomaly, is it cool that I still vote DEM?

I own several firearms (including the Devil's own AR and AK variants). I used to and will probably renew my concealed carry permit (primarily so I can keep them in my truck).
Oh, I drive a big ol dirty 13 year old Ford F150 too. It's sporting a brand new "Hayduke Lives" bumper sticker that replaced the older faded one.
I eat meat. Not so much red meat on a regular basis, mainly a chicken and coldcuts kinda thing, but I will grill a mean steak on occasion.

Just because I eat meat, own guns, and drive a noisy pickup truck does that preclude me from being a Democrat? My values are very left-leaning (anti-death penalty, pro healthcare, pro social justice, very environmental...) I always thought that it was your core values that determined how you vote...

What do you do that is atypical of the arugula eating, latte drinking, Prius driving idea of what a Democrat is supposed to be? Does it make you any less of a Democrat?

I'm still gonna hang around here if that's cool (and even if it isnt)?

Not the greenest of cars, trust me.

My Honda civic will not do well in fire coverage, and trying to chase fire brush trucks with it would be dangerous for the vehicle and the fire crews.

Heck, the other day at a church fire...I used the 4x4...trust me, the Honda would have gotten stuck.

I am for unions, universal healthcare and education, higher minimum wage, an establishment of a maximum wage, believe in fighting climate change by any means necessary (even if unconstitutional), support very strict gun control (a la Japan) and will vote straight Dem until I have a pragmatic reason not to.

I also stand with the LGBT community. I'm coming around on feminist issues. And I support a woman's right to choose. No exceptions.

You live ear or at "fly over country" or a rural area.

You do hunt.

While I do not believe your AK and AR have a place in civilian hands (now lower the effective rate of fire max size of mags at ten, by all means, nothing to do with the shape of gun), I think you can own guns.

We do as you do, with the occasional steak.

But your broad brush is as wide as our urban types.

By the way arugula cooked with butter, garlic, salt and Pepper goes great with that steak!

Nah, I'm from Georgia but I lived in Atlanta where I used to work in investigations/protection- thus the guns. I've never lived "in the country". I went hunting once but felt like an idiot wearing camo trying to sneak up on a deer at dawn.
I couldn't tell you the last time I went shooting.

Stereotypes are funny sometimes.

Where statistically gun ownership is higher than oh even San Diego (city mind you).

So my stereotype was based on what I know from my "country" folk who are living in very red areas.

Sorry.

By the way, I am serious about the Arugula...I am not too fond of it in salads. Nor do we have it often. The local season is two months old. It's affordable for a week, tops two.

to me. So long as you're not one of those gun owners that believes any dialog about gun control means we're trying to ban 'em all (although that statement would get me in trouble with some folks on both sides of the question).

You are allowed to call gun owners, Athiests, meat eaters and pickup truck drivers almost any name in the book but don't dare call a Republican a retard! Trust me, there are many of us here that agree but the (very selective) PC crowd here right now is on a roll.
This has been well noted by this gun owning, meat eating, pickup driving, athiest member of over 11 years.

Yes, you can be a gun owning, pickup driving, meat eating athiest and still be a liberal. Regardless of the PC police that make up the rules as they go along. Think of them as the tea party left and give them the same creedence or put them on ignore.

I do and I am much happier for it.

You don't need our permission.

For my own self I do not self-identify as "Democrat" unless we are just talking about registration simply because I do not like the personification of increasingly specific categories that modern society seems compelled to impose on us. As a practical matter, I vote Democratic because it is often because the only other alternative is fascism.

I shoot a lot recreationally, though I do not hunt. I appreciate the practical need to make guns harder to get, but I also understand--mostly at a gut level--the resistance to it too.

I don't expect to stop eating meat for ideological reasons. It seems too much like a theistic dietary restriction. I honestly don't care about the feelings of domestic animals, though I do care about conservation. I would snap the necks of every test animal on Earth if it would save one AIDS-riddled crack whore for a week. Those things and my personal conviction that religion is false an, therefore, bad and a refusal to get that view to myself are what put me outside of DU norms.

with everyone all the time while everyone agrees with you all the time, you are probably not on DU. You might be on a cooking site or a knitting site or maybe a gun or truck site, but not DU.

No two DUers think the same about every topic. That's what makes this such an interesting site. Can you imagine how boring it would be if we all agreed?

You can teach others (even if they don't want to hear what you have to say), and you can learn from others (even if you don't want to hear what they have to say). That's what is so great about DU.
