Man with the gold and gun

South Bend man says weapons charge in N.Y. result of simple mistake

Ryan Jerome served in Iraq after terrorists attacked New York City on 9/11.

But when the South Bend veteran took his first bite out of the Big
Apple in September, the taste was sour.

Jerome, 28, a former Marine tail gunner who owns and operates R.J.’s
Gold jewelry exchange in South Bend, could face jail time in New York
following his September arrest on a gun possession charge during a
business trip that turned into a sightseeing trek to the Empire State
Building.

Jerome has a legal permit to carry his 45-caliber Ruger in Indiana — a
legality he says was “confusing” when he researched New York’s gun
laws online before he landed in New York City Sept. 27 carrying
$15,000 in gold he planned to sell at a Long Island refinery.

Jerome searched the website www.handgunlaw.us. The site consists of a
column of all U.S. states on the left with a list of selected states
stretching from each state under the header: “States that honor the
listed state at left permit/license.”

Next to Indiana, several states are listed. New York is not listed —
meaning, New York does not recognize gun permits from Indiana.
