For those folks who wonder what the big deal is about a little snow, I will explain. It's not that we can't handle it, it's that we don't get this kind of snow so much anymore.
When I was a girl we had lots of snow in the winter here on the Maine coast. And the old folks would tell us, "You think this is a lot of snow and cold? My grandparents took the sleigh/car across the harbor to visit relatives when I was a boy." My husband used to wear his snowsuit under his Halloween costume and climb over drifts to visit houses back when he lived up north.
But my own kids, they've seen my pansies still growing in November and December a couple of years back. The weather is just different now, so having snow like this brings back memories. (And besides, we're running a precipitation deficit and have been for several months, so getting some good snow matters. )
Update: Well we finally look like winter should look! (Although the snowbanks aren't nearly as impressive as when I went to college in the mountains. I have fond memories of April sunbathing next to 15 and 20 footers!)
Video of the storm, and my husband taking measurements of the snow. (Updated at 2:40pm)
7:30am
Noon: 46 inches by the door, in the backyard 25 inches.
5:00pm and the drift at the door is now 52 inches.
Here's the cars this morning at 7:30 or so:
Noon
Cars at 5:00pm, and it's still snowing.
Cars at 11:00am the day after. Can't see the boulders lining the driveway now, and I gotta remember to tell the kids to stay off the snowbanks on the far left. My poor roses are under there! LOL

(53,093 posts)Hopefully the worst is over. Be careful shoveling. It's easy to throw your back out.
This storm is kind of weird for me. Living in MN we get blizzards all the time but never lose power. In fact, I've never heard of a power outrage here from a winter storm.
GreenPartyVoter
(72,382 posts)had a wood stove back then, and I think that's why I feel uneasy without one now.
(The island was connected to the mainland by a bridge, so it's not as romantic as it sounds. But it was an island nonetheless. )

(53,093 posts)Is it that our snow is not as heavy or the infrastructure is better? It seems to me we get all kinds of different types of snow--some light and fluffy, some heavy and wet--at different times of the winter.

(8,462 posts)Depending on what the temperature is it'll be rain, freezing rain, wintery mix or snow... or all of the above over the course of the day. Just part of living in the middle of the continent in February.

(72,382 posts)the kind you would take out in an ice shack. If the power goes out we'll close off all the doors and use that in the great room. (One of the few disadvantages to an open floor plan. Trying to heat it when the power's down! LOL)

(4,079 posts)Here in Colorado we're in the middle of a nasty drought.
I live in the mountains and we've had our share of 2'-3' snowstorms. The biggest one ever was in 2002 when we got a "perfect storm" that dumped over five feet of snow with a few seven-foot drifts. We were snowed in for a week.
We could use a big storm to get the snowpack up, so...I'm jealous
I hope you don't lose power. Stay safe and warm.

(5,815 posts)of photographs and video I have taken during hurricanes or the approach of one. The trees flail like that and bursts of rain will come down, similar to the way the snow did in your video. There is something fascinating about watching weather, especially really extreme weather like wind and rain that is out of the norm for your area! We watch as long as we can out our front door and through the bay window in our kitchen. We have to force ourselves to stay away from the windows when the storm is raging. During Hurricane Ivan, we got up in the middle of the night (during the height of the storm) to check on things. We saw a tree down in the front yard as we peered out the windows ... didn't DARE open the door to look. While I was standing there with my hands on the window cupped so I could see out, I felt a huge blast of wind hit the window and the glass part sort of flexed...not the glass but the whole section of glass in the window framing.....and I figured that it was good time to step away from the window.
Hope you are safe and that your heater continues to keep you warm and toasty. After a hurricane, staying warm and toasty is not the problem.

(72,382 posts)Maine coast in my lifetime, but nothing like what the south has to deal with. My cousins in Florida have had to put up with some nasty ones.
I agree that the weather is fascinating, but I like watching it from the safety of my own home, either through the window or on the TV. I love watching programs about storm chasing, and wonder at the bravery of the people who go out and do that stuff!

Here in NE Kansas I just took a picture of a caterpillar running across my driveway. It is 50 degrees and my cottonwood tree is almost leafing out.
Hate to admit it but I would have loved a snow like this, been a long time.
Be warm and safe and thanks, love the video.

(2,506 posts)It really is no big deal. Grew up in Iowa and lived in that area 45 years...those were real blizzards out there. This is actually more like Massholes trying to drive in their usual manner only in snow. We amuse ourselves up here by watching them on their way to the ski resorts.

(6,234 posts)What do you DO with all that snow? How do you get your cars out?
Also, don't you have to worry about the glass in the doors or the roof breaking?
That's just unreal.
GreenPartyVoter
(72,382 posts)1 & 2) Shift it out of the way with plows and shovels. I have a feeling there is going to be a huge pile of it in my garden, just ahead of the cars.
3 & 4) Not worried about the glass in the doors at this point or the roof, but when we lived in a trailer hubby would have to go out and rake the roof off to keep it from caving in.
This is a pretty good amount of snow for here from one storm, but my cousins in Colorado have seen far worse.
