Tax hike suggested to save lives of shelter dogs and cats
February 5, 2013|By Brittany Wallman, Sun Sentinel
Would you raise your property taxes to save a cat's life?
How about a dog's life?
An initiative that would let voters decide whether they'd pay more taxes to keep thousands of unwanted pets from being put to sleep is making its way around Broward County.
Pets' Trust advocates were successful in Miami-Dade County in November, when their straw-poll ballot question was overwhelmingly approved. The Miami-Dade County Commission now has to agree to put the tax in place.
In Broward, county commissioners were torn by the idea Tuesday, with only three of the nine solidly in favor of letting the voters decide in November 2014.
Among the remaining six, the question was asked aloud: Are the lives of dogs and cats really more important than creating jobs, ending homelessness, putting the foreclosure crisis to rest, improving mobility for bike riders and pedestrians?
"I love animals just like everybody else," Commissioner Barbara Sharief said. "But I cannot see putting animals before humans at this point in time, and so I will not be supporting this."

How about ya'll sit down and work on all of these things at once. Good lordy it's not like these problems are brand new and never shown up before and you haven't had any time to think about it.
I am 47 and except for the foreclosure crisis (which we should be hitting up the banks for) those problems have been here and no one wants to do what is needed to fix them.
So yeah, go ahead and at least save some freaking animals if you have the chance because you aren't doing any damned thing else.
