Orson Scott Card - anti LGBT writer

I don't know how many of you are familiar with this, but Mr. Card is famous for writing one of the "best" Sci-Fi novels ever (although his follow-ups pretty much sucked, branding him as a one-trick-pony). But, he's pretty built his reputation on that single novel. DC comics has decided to allow him to write a "reboot" of the Superman series based on this reputation. He has also written some comics before. I haven't read those comics, so I can't comment on their value. Much of the outrage of him writing this reboot is because it is Superman - the "Man of Tomorrow".

Personally, I don't think Card should be allowed to spread his poison - PERIOD. Especially since he is portrayed as a science-fiction author, which implies that his writing is at least based on science research; which clearly it is not.

So, I signed a simple on-line petition. Knowing that it wouldn't do much good but would at least help express my opinion. I also forwarded the link to that petition to a work friend of mine.

As it turned out, my friend compared the simple petition to McCarthyism.

Anyway, here is the email that I wish that I could send to Mr. Card, although I have not as yet found a good email address. I am sending it to his website, but I doubt it will actually get to him:

Dear Mr. Card,

Please do not simply dismiss this out-of-hand. Please indulge me.

You are a SCIENCE-fiction writer. I’m not sure if you know what that means, but it means that whatever you write, no matter how speculative, should have some sort of scientific basis. ESPECIALLY if you are writing some type of essay which is not speculative fiction.

Your essays against homosexuality reflect purely “old-fashioned” attitudes and are anti-science, ignoring all scientific studies. I would be happy to supply you with examples of this research, but as a Science fiction writer it is incumbent upon you to properly research this issue. But I would suggest that you begin with the research of John Money and particularly the case of David Reimer.

Or, you could simply “talk” to a Gay person. That is what actually changed my attitude, prior to learning about the research. The Scientific research merely supported what I had already discovered. Although there are instances of pedophilia that result in damaging an individual for life, this is NOT the case for the vast majority of our LGBT community, which you would know if you had performed the due diligence normally required of a SCIENCE fiction writer.

Further, if you had done such due diligence as a SCIENCE fiction writer much less as a SCIENCE essayist, you would have known that the definition of “marriage” has changed many times throughout history. Usually, the definition was decided by law.

However, the difference here is that many advantages are granted to a legal spouse under the current lawful definition of “marriage”. In every incarnation of the oaths pledged in a legal marriage, there is the word “Love”. I am not naïve enough to believe that in many cases of swearing that oath that “love” is not a factor, which means they are in violation of the oath that they swore. However, if two grown people are in LOVE and are not allowed to declare that oath, then that is UNFAIR.

Despite the fact that many people marry for reasons other than to procreate, you then went on to declare that children raised within LGBT households were somehow “not normal”, despite scientific research to the opposite.

Therefore, sir, you and your entire professional career are a fraud. Again, let me re-emphasize that - you are a FRAUD. Your current success is based on a FRAUD.

If you wish to continue your career, you should base it on SCIENCE, considering that you are classified as a SCIENCE fiction writer. Otherwise, I would suggest that you enjoy your Ill-gotten gains based on defrauding the general public with the knowledge that you will not fool us again.

One thing that I would like to remind you of is that you are hurting real people. As just one example, there are thousands of people in hospitals that are not allowed to be visited by their true loved ones because they do not have the marital rights of being “next-of-kin”. There are much more examples that you should be aware of if you had done your due diligence as a SCIENCE fiction writer.

I regret that I actually bought any of your books and contributed to your unnatural hatred.

Very well written, I hope it gets to him. Whoever called that McCarthyism should rush to their local library and spend some time in the history section!

Anti everything liberal, sane people stand for.

Hack writer extraordinaire who hoodwinked people into believing his piece of shit right wing claptrap Enders game was a good book. No it wasn't.it was an exercise in finding an excuse to beat the shit out of others.

He writes creepy repulsive things like an older man having astral sex with a 12 yo, but thats okay because it was on the atral plane. Taking over your killers body for yourself, essentially killing them, cause hey, they deserved it. USING your own child's problems to sell a book.

His Christ complex mania permeates his writing and teaks of his self-centered narcissism.

I wont read a word he writes, I've known for some time he's a RW Pig. He's not that great in the first place, but he's a prolific mother. I won't buy comics he's involved with. I won't read books of short stories if he's one of the authors. The man is despicable. Avoiding him given his current popularity is a bit of a trick, and I hope his homophobic ass loses sales from all the venues he has his filthy little fingers in.

I Love Sci-Fi, loathe him.

haven't got round to reading it yet. I'm afraid, that without seeing the petition, but having an inkling from the description, I would probably agree with your friend in his take about it. I think the first amendment is one of the key foundations of this country, which means everyone is entitled to write about and say their views, no matter how offensive they might be.

He is a Mormon. Now, I know there are liberal Mormons, but the fiasco of Mitt Romney should have taught as that Mormon high command, like it's older, ugly sister the Vatican, will have no problem selling stone age ideas.

Which of his novels is one of the best Sci-Fi novels ever, that is anti-LGBT?

This is a serious question from an equal rights supporter.

I read some OSC decades ago. My awareness of LGBT issues was null at that time & my recollection of the stories I read is weak. What I do recall is that the stories of Ender & Speaker resonate with me, in this era of drone wars, & remote killing.

What did I miss in OSC writings?

I didn't get a right-wing vibe off it, but maybe I read it differently like how, "Moby Dick," is supposed to be about so many different things. Ultimately, to me, it's a boring book about a giant fishy. (I really hate Melville)

I don't really care one way or another if Card writes some Superman stories. If he's hired to do so then that's his right. Protesting his doing so and trying to influence DC are rights as well. Who knows? He might write what will be considered some of the best Superman stories out there. As someone who holds a reverence for the 1st Amendment, I don't think it's right to say that he shouldn't be allowed to "spread his poison." If the 1st Amendment protects the rights of a low-class, antigay jackass like him, it will protect me as well.

For the most part, I try to separate a fiction writer's personal views from his fictional works. H.P. Lovecraft was a racist writing a poem called, "On the Creation of Niggers." Frank L. Baum of, "Wizard of Oz," fame wrote essays calling for the complete elimination of Native Americans. As a person who performs a lot of magic, I admire Penn and Teller for their skills and their chutzpah, but a lot of their libertarian views put me off.

And now for one of my amazing skills - finding an online comic for any subject. Click Next Comic 5 or 6 times to read the entire storyline.
