When being "properly" religious determines electability, we end up with a bunch of loonies in the driver's seat, all underqualified to do the actual driving, and all seeming to pull the wheel in different directions. The populace gets caught up in it, too, as pet peeves and personal sensabilities are massaged and assaulted throughout the election cycle and beyond. Despite the ever increasing body of knowledge which contradicts pretty much any core religious claim, the mixing of politics and religion continues, with ever increasing intensity.
And this...this, is what we get. This insanity, this out-of-control craziness...this is what results from the mixing of religion and politics.
I do not know, and currently have no way of knowing, but I believe our founding fathers (or in the least TJ) knew what would result from the mix, so they tried to keep us from it. But because they misjudged its power, or could not know how its power would grow with the development of mass communications, or maybe their culture was rooted more firmly in reality than is ours, religion continues to this day to be interjected into our political discourse, and is promptly scooped up and used by unscrupulous politicians for personal gain (why else throw it out there next to actually relevant qualifications?).
Perhaps this explains the continuing (and apparently still escalating) fracturing of our culture three years beyond Bush's deliberate dividing of the country...
Just a thought.
And...I know, I'm probably going to cause "trouble" again with this post...I really don't mean to...I just calls 'em like I sees 'em...sure gets some folks out of whack, when I do...for instance, I posted a thread stating cops were not part of the 99% (got kicked around really hard for that one, I did) and then like three weeks later a post was front paged quoating an anthropoligist who, using the same reasoning I did, said cops weren't part of the 99%...seems most folks liked it when he said it...anyway, sorry in advance if I'm causing more trouble with this...I am compelled to do so...not my fault, I swear...can't...stop...typing...
