Want to help women who can't afford an abortion? You can.

It's no secret that poor women are the ones being hurt by both old and new laws restricting access to abortion. 42% of women seeking an abortion fall beneath the poverty line. And the economic repercussions for those seeking and failing to get an abortion are stark.

There are organizations that raise funds for women who can't afford to pay for an abortion and the related costs that are now necessary in so many states due to waiting periods. Here are two of them:

New to abortion funding? It’s all here – where we are, how we got here, and how we can reverse more than three decades of discrimination against women living in poverty. Sure, there’s a lot you can learn, but the most important thing is what you already know:

Women’s lives matter.

That’s why we need to fund abortion. It’s why we need to overturn the Hyde Amendment and every other obstacle that stands between a woman and the abortion she needs.

The Facts

27% of women seeking abortion travel at least 50 miles to get the care they need.

Anti-abortion ‘counseling centers’ outnumber abortion facilities two to one.

1,694 doctors, nurses, midwives, social workers, case workers, and other professionals work with us in a given year to make abortion more accessible to the women they serve.

There is an abortion fund in Dr. Tiller's name. I'm going to donate. I've donated for years to NARAL but feel they have been very ineffective. I think I will fund abortions directly.

And I think giving in the name of a man murdered by terrorists is the least I can do.

even if it's only a buck or two.

Thanks, cali. I will never forget driving my best friend 80 miles to obtain a legal abortion many years ago. It would have been a whole lot harder if we didn't have money and access to a car (and I know those are things plenty of people don't have).

She was 19 and pregnant from a very abusive relationship. She had a restraining order against him but he broke it on a regular basis and no one could do anything about it. When she found out she was pregnant she spoke with a caseworker at the local DFS. They said that they couldn't help her unless she released the father's name and that they would then contact the father with her whereabouts. (20 years ago this was very, very common.) If he knew where she was hiding he would kill her.

We drove over 100 miles from our small town and stayed the night. We then took her to another friend's house while she healed a couple of days. Shortly after she left the state and never returned.

I know this happens more than anyone ever admits and the women involved in these situations are some of the most vulnerable.
