Lawmaker Worries Divorce Makes Girls Promiscuous
Seven Republicans in the Iowa House are pushing a bill to prohibit parents of minor children from getting a "no fault" divorce, Radio Iowa reports.
Rep. Tedd Gassman (R) explained the issue is "near and dear" to his heart because his daughter and son-in-law recently divorced, putting his granddaughter at risk.
Said Gassman: "There's a 16-year-old girl in this whole mix now. Guess what? What are the possibilities of her being more promiscuous? What are the possibilities of all these other things surrounding her life that a 16-year-old girl, with hormones raging, can get herself into?"

(5,506 posts)would it matter to him if the grandson became promiscuous? Or would that just be chalked up to "boys being boys".

(8,492 posts)Imagine how awesome it would be to have him as your grandfather. Good grief. What an ass. Nothing like your grampa telling the world that he's afraid you're going to become a slut because your parents divorced. Way to build self esteem in what is probably a confused teenage girl.

(15,324 posts)I'm thinking it's a lot deeper disfuction than that.
Does this guy look at ALL 16 year old girls as potential "sluts"? Rather strange way to talk about your grandaughter. I'm thinking this guy definitely has some serious sexual "strangeness" going on.
If I were the girls parents, I'd make sure this guy was never left alone with her...and "Yes", I am implying what it appears I'm implying
This guys "ideas" about his grandaughter are "creepy"!

(6,787 posts)I was planning to respond to this story with "Wait, WHAT?" But you beat me to it with your post name.
Good grief, indeed!
Yeah, that's how I ended up with this name. I spent the day reading stories of GOP shenanigans and found myself repeating "Wait...WHAT???" over and over in my head. That was about 8 years ago.

(10,103 posts)Making divorce easier is better than forcing two people to stay together, so they can really make life confusing and hard for their children.

HF 223 Commercial Licenses for Explosives & Criminal Background Checks. Extends the commercial licenses for explosives from one to three years and requires applicants to get a criminal background check. (passed House 96-0) to Senate
HSB 41 Setoff Procedures for Collection of Debts. The bill as amended ensures political subdivisions have some process/opportunity for a debtor to contest the liability after the setoff process is initiated by the city and before their money is actually taken as a setoff. The state ombudsmen office had complaints where the claimed liability was not owed by the person or the amount was wrong. Current law has this process for state agencies and the judicial/clerks of courts. The bill adds political subdivisions to this current process. (passed Committee 21-0) to House Calendar
HSB 112 Dosages of Phenylbutazone in Certain Horse Races. Allows the Racing and Gaming Commission to establish restrictions on dosage amounts for phenylbutazone in races recognized as graded stakes races by the Iowa Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association. It allows them to lower medication levels at these specific races. (passed Committee 21-0) to House Calendar
HSB 97 Beginning Farmers First Crack at DNR Lands. Requires the Department of Natural Resources to annually lease agricultural land it owns or manages to beginning farmers. In the event that multiple beginning farmers express interest in a particular lease, DNR will select by a random draw. If no beginning farmer expresses interest, DNR will revert back to their current lease rules. A beginning farmer cannot lease more than 240 acres of cropland; this does not apply to grazing leases. DNR may specify the terms of the lease, which may be based on conservation system, crop rotation, and cover crops required by DNR, but in no case can a lease be for more than 7 years. The beginning farmer cannot sublease the ag land. And, the beginning farmer is eligible to enter into a subsequent lease for the same property; however, preference will be given to new beginning farmers who indicate interest in a lease. (passed Committee 22-0) to House Calendar
HSB 129 Soil Conservation, Metrologist, Pesticide Application, and Motor Fuel Standards. The bill came from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. It modernizes the current soil conservation revolving loan program; allows DNR to designate one of its employees as a state metrologist instead of current law that requires they do it; modernizes Iowas law on motor fuel standards, especially as it regards ethanol and biodiesel, by removing specific stuff out of the Code and allowing IDALS to adopt the specifics through their rule; and changes insurance requirements for aerial application of pesticides. (passed Committee 22-0) to House Calendar

(12,081 posts)First that he would concentrate on how it might make his grand daughter promiscuous instead of concentrating on the general stress it causes is weird and creepy. There's no doubt divorce can cause stress, but so can living in a household where two parents are fighting. Why would he focus on the possibility of promiscuity? Why do all these republicans always make everything about sex? These people really give me the creeps.
