About 10 years ago a buddy and I were down there after leaving a party on some X. Someone smashed into his truck on commerce street right after we got onto the strip there. We pushed the truck to a parking lot...went and partied for a couple hours. Came back around 1:00 A.M. and the stereo and system were gone, back window smashed out...
Finally some friends picked us up around 2:30 in the morning but that last hour waiting after everything closes and people are gone gets freaky

(3,867 posts)The Deep Ellum area especially is coming back but is very sketchy after dark. I have no problem helping out a homeless person if I can, but there are certain times people should be more aware and careful who they speak to or allow to get near them. Compassion is one thing but common sense is the best way to stay safe and alive.
Once while in Atlanta , a friend and I asked a "homeless" person to help us find our way to the nearest liquor store. Two of them took us through the "secret ways" through downtown ATL. Since we carried no cash we gave them a few beers as thanks. They haggled us for more beer and cash. We said no and walked away.
on edit: my use of quotations around homeless was to imply that not all those out there are truly homeless. Not to belittle them. There was a story of a "homeless" man in downtown Dallas that hung around the Ross St. area and near Dealy Plaza that made over $60,000 asking for change and stuff.

(3,867 posts)Could have bought one with cash if he wanted to. People treat the homeless poorly, but people should still be careful.

(30,251 posts)There are plenty of facilities that offer meals and a place to sleep. Most of the money doesn't go for food, but for their addiction (drugs and alcohol). Instead, they suggest offering to buy them a meal.

My temptation--before the highway department discarded the sign--was to place another sign immediately below it reading:
"Insensitive assholes drive down property values."
(As to the sign in the OP--No money? Fine, if you think they'll just buy alcohol or drugs with it. But "Do not give food to anyone"? Really?)
