As people are living longer, and more and more are suffering from dementia, medical professionals are increasingly looking to science and technology to come up with new tools to help people remain independent and keep them safe
A new type of shoe with a built-in GPS system has been created to help give people suffering from dementia more freedom to move around.
The tracking device broadcasts a signal, like a mobile telephone, that can be tracked by computer or smartphone.
Although similar systems had already been available that work with a wrist band or necklace medallion, manufacturers say the shoe is a safer option because many people with dementia do not like to wear things they are not accustomed to and may take them off.
