American Business Treats Its Employees Like The Romans Treated Their Slaves - Except

they have not resorted to feeding their employees to the eels yet.* Overworked, underpaid and working in fear has become the lot of a large part of the work force. And it has gotten much worse since the downturn. Even if a person has a fairly decent job they are always "under the threat of chop" like workers were over 100 years ago. they are always at the mercy of their boss or the job. Late hours, lost days off, lost vacation, coming into work sick, on call all the time, prodded and probed mercilessly even to get a job in the first place. And in some cases tested and violated even on the job.

It was bad in 1998 when I retired and based on what I am witnessing the work place is becoming more like a gulag. And work now even invades your private life like no other time in history. And Americans are being told they are free. What a crock that it is now. Unless you are economically free you are not free. The rich are the only ones who are free.

Everyone who reads this post who has a job knows exactly what I mean. And if the GOP gets its way work will truly become a chamber of horrors right out of Edgar Alan Poe. The lack of unions and now lack of enforcement of wage and labor laws are why workers are losing ground every single day. There may not be physical lashing, though that may come next, but there is psychological lashing and torture.

I do not know why the work force puts up with all the abuse. The GOP mantra about work sounds like Captain Bligh of the Bounty. Except the USA has become the Bounty in the workplace.

SO IF WORKERS THINK THINGS ARE BAD NOW. THE BEST IS YET TO COME. BEND OVER!

*Roman slaves worked in fear and trepidation. Wealthy Romans had status when they had their own fish ponds that were hatcheries for the fish they rose and ate. They also raised eels that were also carnivorous. If a slave became too balky or did something that was not approved of they WERE fed to the eels. Even dropping a favored glass or goblet could make you eel bait. The only thing that would save you was a pardon from your master. Now we know what thumbs down was about. Throw him or her into the pond.

We had begun to experiment with "Employee directed workforce". Great practice based on the
idea that the employees who did the job would know how to correct problems and increase productivity
better than the bosses.

Then, they bought a company that brought some people onto the board of directors who where
only interested in the return on investment. From there on out it was all about the money. We lost
benefits and our cost of living disappeared. There were cutbacks about every year or two. The better we did, the more they shrunk our ranks. Promotions were fewer and they would tell us that if we just sustained our output that we would have a good shot at a promotion next year. It was divide and conquer. Any little thing they could throw at us to deny us a promotion, was.

Every change they made resulted in a loss for the workers and a gain for the bonuses of the hierarchy.
In stead of putting money back into the growth of the company they took it as bonus for the bosses.

Now, our health plan has such a high deductible that it may as well be considered catastrophic insurance.
Everything has gone up in that past 10 years - premiums, health care, power, gas, heating oil, food - everything!

It is about time that some of the money that was shifted to the wealthy came back down to the workers.

They have us where they want us - It's better to skip medications and doctors appointments and have money for food and heat but then we die early which is just what the bastards want!
