Bonobo raised it in Ask the Administrators:

Note we do have a few central/south Asian ones - the Dalai Lama, Arundhati Roy, Gandhi. But no others I can see.
I'd suggest Aung San Suu Kyi, for a start. Perhaps Ban Ki Moon, too - while I doubt he'd get that many people using him, there could be a case for having the current UN Secretary General in there as a matter of principle.
Anyone else?

(25,936 posts)does anyone know of a good reason why anyone cannot upload an avatar of their choosing, regardless of donor status? DU is the only discussion board I know that limits that ability to donors - all the while serving up such a motley collection of rarely-updated generic avatars.

(101,311 posts)I do know another political forum that allows donors to add a very short tagline to their avatar, as well as the 'no ads' etc. benefits.
'Motley' is a good thing in a collection of avatars.

(3,414 posts)I love this song, which was played on the AM radio the summer of 1963:
remember, this was less than 20 years after the start of WWII. I had no idea what the words meant, but I just loved the melody, as did many others. He died later in the shootdown of Japan Airlines Flight 123: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyu_Sakamoto
Then, the following November, the world ended.

(952 posts)On one of the forums I participate on you can upload your own avatar. You can also upload a sound to go with it that plays when you mouse over the avatar. Sound emitting avatars are sooo annoying no one can resist.

(10,362 posts)His economic reforms are one of the most important events since the Industrial Revolution. 500 million people lifted out of poverty.
JI7
(89,248 posts)i wonder if we will ever find out who that was. i'm guessing he was most likely put to death.
But in the grand scheme, the Tiananmen Square protestors were relatively insignificant. The system they were protesting eventually won out due to the economic miracle China subsequently experienced, and raised 500 million from poverty.
The democratic principles they fought for have not produced similar progress in The Philippines, Indonesia, or even India. In fact, the term BRICs has become somewhat outdated because China (the only non-democratic of BRIC) has left behind the other 3 (all democratic) in terms of growth.
Deng Xiaoping has arguably done more to raise humanity out of poverty than any single person in the history of the world. China could have easily gone the other way had he not existed and the Maoists won out.

The Cold Mountain trail goes on and on:
The long gorge choked with scree and boulders,
The wide creek, the mist-blurred grass.
The moss is slippery, though there's been no rain
The pine sings, but there's no wind.
Who can leap the world's ties
And sit with me among the white clouds?

This guy, known to most, was born in San Francisco:
For the styling DUers, Vera Wang, who is a generous donor to Dem pols:
I M Pei, who designed a number of remarkable buildings, among them the JFK Library:
And let's not forget another Asian leader in landscape and architectural design, the creator of the Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin:
My pal, Eric "Rick" Shinseki, who was right about Iraq, right about Afghanistan, and was screwed by Bushco, only to rise again under BHO as Secretary of Veteran's Affairs:
To continue a military theme, how about BGEN Albert Lyman, who, despite his name, was the first Asian general in the Army:
How about WW2 hero RADM Gordon Chung-Hoon?
Or the fighting Ahns? Susan (on right) was the first female USN gunnery officer:
How about the world of entertainment?
Kal Penn, of Harold and Kumar and tons of other stuff fame--he also works for POTUS on occasion:
Carrie Ann Inaba, of DWTS fame, who is active in animal rights issues, too:
