I thought the aim of philosophy is to start with something so simple that it seemingly not worth talking about, and to end with something so paradoxical that no one believes a word of it. We should just bring back Meta if that's the case.

Statement of Purpose:

This group is to discuss philosophy. We will basically discuss common sense, however we will use big words.
In here, according to Nietzsche: God is dead. However, according to God: Nietzsche is dead.
If you read and don't understand what was written, or you write and don't understand what you mean, then you are doing it right.
If people understand you so poorly that they don't even understand your complaint about them not understanding you, then your doing it right.

Rules:
Rule #1 For every philosopher, there exists an equal and opposite philosopher.
Rule #2 They’re both wrong.

However, I'm taking a coursera course (www.coursera.org for anyone interested) called "Know Thyself" which is a philosophy course. I don't know if I have enough knowledge about the subject (yet) but I'm willing to give it a try if others are interested.

Two of my favorite quotes - what are yours?

"Something that does not exist in itself can, because it is produced in respect to its form (though not in respect to its existence) by the subject with its form of intuition and thought, be known as an empirical reality.

For although in a certain sense and for light-minded persons non-existent things can be more easily and irresponsibly represented in words than existing things, for the serious and conscientious historian it is just the reverse.

Nothing is harder, yet nothing is more necessary, than to speak of certain things whose existence is neither demonstrable nor probable.

The very fact that serious and conscientious men treat them as existing things brings them a step closer to existence and to the possibility of being born."

"Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose."

Wed Mar 13, 2013, 01:04 AM
Mar 2013

I was working to pay for my ridiculously expensive college education at a very high-end retail store. I was waiting on a woman and her husband who was more than annoyed to be in the cosmetics department at the Chanel counter. He took great delight in treating me like crap and made more than a few comments implying I was just a stupid salesgirl, even implying I couldn't add in my head when his wife asked me to subtotal her purchases.

A co-worker came up and said, "You can't treat her like that. Do you know where she goes to college?" He asked and I answered. He scoffed and rudely asked my major. When I answered, "Philosophy." He guffawed and said, "I thought they didn't make that anymore." I just grinned.

became aware of the physical realities of the world outside of the cave. When he returned to free the other prisoners, telling them the truths, the refused to leave, preferring to believe their
false theories.

So, it appears to me that realities existed in the physical World. The point of view was the deciding factor.

The Existentialist all but killed the science of philosophy by postulating that the realities where present within their minds and by doing so, they refused to leave the "caves" of their minds. They seem to be derisive about physical science observations as a means of understanding truth. If my theory about them is correct, they were making the same mistake religious thinkers make, that is to fundamentally fabricate the truth from the whole cloth of their minds.

It is my belief that philosophy does not exist. Obviously, one has to define terms such as what is philosophy. For the sake of this discussion philosophy is to inquire about how we think and how we describe reality.

So my belief is we must inquire about the physical properties of our brain and figure out the physical, chemical process of creating thoughts before we can get to the hows and whys of existence. (On a side note the only reliable way to figure out the chemistry is using science and the scientific method - which is a branch of philosophy!)

ANyway, philosophers are the best arguers on earth. THis does not mean they have any special insight upon reality, just that they can out-argue their opponents.
