Happy Birthday Congressman Grayson.

Got this email today from his staff---and yes Congressman, we do care.

Here at Grayson Headquarters, or, as we like to call it, "The Kremlin," (just kidding!), there was a great debate about whether to send out this super-important news alert, regarding the birthday of You-Know-Who. The debate was not exactly a Lincoln-Douglas debate, but something above and beyond a Palin-Palin debate, don't cha know? Here are the facts:

Today is Congressman Alan Grayson's 55th birthday.
Do you care?

According to one sect/sodality/school of thought in the campaign, everyone else in elective office sends out birthday notes, so why shouldn't we? George Washington's birthday has been a federal holiday since 1879, so this is not exactly a new concept.

On the other hand, a different camp/clique/coterie was of the view that we should stick to policy. Let's talk about Social Security, Medicare, jobs, benefits, housing, education, immigration, taxes, etc., etc. After all, during the November campaign, we ran TV ads in which Alan said, "This election is not about me, it's about you." So what does Alan Grayson's birthday have to do with you? Like, nothing.

Also, the track record for political leaders establishing personality cults is hardly encouraging. Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Kim Il Sung - not exactly role models.

On the other, other hand, people must be curious about such things, because the campaign constantly receives personal inquiries about Alan. Like these:

Why are Alan's children named Skye, Star, Sage, Storm and Stone?

What was it like for Alan to grow up in the Bronx?

What's with the cowboy boots?

Why is Alan so stupid?

(The last question comes from Tea Partiers.) So clearly, some of our audience thinks of Alan, likes Alan, wants to know more about Alan and - gasp! - even wishes him well.

So please excuse the passive-aggressive framing, but Congressman Alan Grayson turns 55 years old today, and does that matter to you? If not, then we understand. If yes, then please hit the "Reply" button and offer best wishes, or hit the CONTRIBUTE button below, and send a birthday gift to our campaign. Whatever amount you want, but $55 certainly would fit the bill.

And, whenever it's your turn, happy birthday to you. And many happy returns.

Yesterday, it was my birthday.
I hung one more year on the line.
I should be depressed.
My life's a mess.
But I'm having a good time.

- Paul Simon, "Have a Good Time" (1975).

You made it to the floor of the benefit cuts by the pugs, so you'll get some social security!
