As I was driving home this evening, I heard coverage of the New Pope's message that the the Church should "avoid worldly things."
Being completely unused to religious direction; but somewhat familiar with religious doctrine/Biblical passages ... I came to the same question I had with some Protestant churches ... Aren't Laws and Governance, "worldly things?"
If MY interpretation of MY interpretation of MY religious doctrine says, "Black folks need to avoid worldly things because we will reign supreme and are pre-destined to ascend to the heights", and I preach that 24/7 to everyone within earshot, Black, white and whatever ... IMHO, it would be okay ... so long as I didn't lobby government to affect that Black ascension.
So, IMHO, the New Pope's message would be a good thing! He can talk to anyone/everyone willing to listen, , so long as he did/does not attempt to have the government act on it. For example, He can talk to whomever about anti-GLBT issues, so long as he does not attempt to influence, or encourage others to influence government to enact laws on the subject.
Is that too far fetched?

I don't believe laws & governance would fall under "worldly things." Islamists who believe in sharia would think that secular laws qualify as worldly things to be avoided.
Jesus said "render unto Caesar that which belongs to Caesar." Generally, most Christians take that to mean you pay taxes and you obey secular laws, but you're trying to also obey God's laws.
