Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the Senate's confirmation of Senator John Kerry to be Secretary of State. As you know, he was confirmed to the position on January 29. Although I respect Secretary Kerry's service to the nation in both the military and the Senate, I opposed his confirmation.
It is the constitutional role of the United States Senate to provide advice and consent on the President's nominations to positions in the executive branch. As such, senators have the responsibility to debate and vote on these nominations based on the merits and qualifications of the nominees.
Secretary of State is not an emeritus position, bestowed merely for long service. This distinguished position requires a nominee who has proven willing and able to advance and defend American interests abroad. Unfortunately, among other things, John Kerry has a long record of supporting treaties and international tribunals that have undermined U.S. sovereignty. Accordingly, I was compelled to vote against his confirmation.
As Secretary of State, I have no doubt that Senator Kerry will work tirelessly and I am committed to working with him in the years to come, especially to protect U.S. interests and preserve national sovereignty.
