Steubenville Rape Trial Verdict (Guilty Verdict 1 year for Richards, 2 years for Mays)

Last edited Sun Mar 17, 2013, 11:13 AM - Edit history (9)

Defendant's parent uses victims last name in open court

http://www.10tv.com/content/sections/video/breaking.html

If anyone finds an alternate please feel free to post it and I'll update my OP.

Edit: CNN has said they will cut when the verdict is read.

Edit 2: CBS covering the trial live now: http://www.cbsnews.com/2718-201_162-1950/cbs-news-live-video/?tag=custom

Edit 3: ABC http://abcnews.go.com/live

Edit 4: Verdict of delinquency, both are found guilty.

Edit 5: Judge for Richards is arguing against confinement.

Edit 6: Both defendants are asked by the judge if they want to say anything and apologize in court.

Edit 7: Parent's of both defendants are speaking. Richard's father identifies the victim's parent's name is court.

Edit 8: Judge talking about disposition and charges

Edit 9: Sentencing Richards: 1 year or up until 21 years old. Mays: 2 years consecutive or up until 21. Both defendants must have sex offender treatment, register as a sex offender, and stay away from the victim. The defendants must pay the court costs. Defendants are credited with time served.

I'm not exactly sure I've got the sentences right, it came out quick.

Edit 10: Corrected sentence. The release is up to the juvenile system whether they are released before they are 21. (last edit)

It won't begin to repair the physical and psychological damage, but it's a start. Such suits are not as much about the amount of money, as in changing the behavior of the powerful who enabled this. And there were too many of them.

there are plenty of minors who are tried as adults on their first offense.

I think it's more like the judge was "splitting the baby in two": he was hesitant to try them as adults as he should have (but he has to go home and live amongst these creatures who have been blaming the victim), but he had to make a show of "justice" to the victim specifically and the rest of the country, broadly lest all faith in the criminal justice system break down over this.

who provided these idiots with the liquor? They provided liquor to way more then the kids involved in this incident. In addition, for any adults involved, if they were part of the school system, why didn't they lose their jobs over it?

edit to add: Adults who provided liquor to these underaged kids are just as much at fault with what happened in Steubenville.

that idea. This was planned very soberly.
This was planned in advance - the girl broke up with one of the football players, another player texted her a few times to come and meet with him, then he drugged her and the raping and drinking and partying started.
So diminished capacity didn't get to ameliorate anything. I think the drinking was, in a way, the only reason they didn't get away with this entirely, because they were too drunk to realise that the pictures and texts would be evidence.
Bt yeah, the providers should have to answer, but looks like this is quite the little good old boy town - not everyone, of course, but the people involved.

in Stubenville of teachers, parents, and boosters providing alcohol for underaged teenage parties. That issue appears to not have been addressed and could lead to further incidents like what happened to that girl. There also seems to be a culture of covering up bad behavior of athletes in Stubenville.

It just seems to me that this wasn't something that started because the boys were drunk; being drunk, of course, was enabling.
I have just seen too many people get away with things by saying oh I was drunk.

The culture of underage drinking in that town needs addressing, but my guess is they will just be more careful.
Wonder if the girl and her family will have to move away.
