I mean it. Fuck you Rob Portman. Where was this enlightenment when other people's children were being oppressed? If it's not your child, your family, your finances, then you can't stand up for what's right?
Fuck you. I mean it.

And my kid may be gay and I support all the gays. I refuse to buy or support anything to do with the boy scouts and I stay away from chickfila and anyone else who gay bashes

(8,379 posts)personal epiphanies, I'm talking about the responsibility of a person who makes laws to not use their own personal agenda to make said laws. They should be concerned for the good of the people.
This is not at all analogous to a friend.

(20,138 posts)MANY people come around on things when it happens to them or someone they know.
If someone comes around on something like this, I welcome it. I always will.
Saying "fuck you" to anyone who doesn't change their mind the "correct" way is a good way to turn people off to changing their mind, or alienate people who would be supporters.

(8,379 posts)If you think it's okey dokey for someone who helps create the laws of this country to "see the light" because it makes his family life more pleasant than bully for you. I hate the hypocrisy and I don't welcome it because it is completely and utterly insincere.

(56,829 posts)While I agree that him doing it based on his personal experience only is not the ideal way to do it, would you have preferred that Sen. Portman remained a "no" vote on gay marriage? Maybe if a few other Republicans followed suit, there would be some momentum to actually get something done.

(56,829 posts)and in Iowa. In more than 2/3 of the states, it is still against the law.
I am also still pretty sure that if a gay couple that got married in CT or Mass would not have their marriage recognized throughout most of the country as well.

(23 posts)whose egocentrism knows no bounds. The man's a hypocrite who, like every other single Republican, needs to be not only defeated, but crushed without mercy, in the next election. I want him to hurt, to cry, to feel inescapeably the prejudice & rejection of his fellow citizens, just like he's been doing for years to anyone different from him.
So let's not wish him to get fucked & die - instead let's grind him under our heel along with all the other warped sons of asshole fathers who inhabit positions of public trust.

It makes me sick how for EVERY damned issue, they are incapable of thinking/legislating for anyone but themselves.
You know, they're like "We have health insurance and pensions - what the hell are all of you complaining about - what more do you want"?

(55,981 posts)if he found out his son was only kidding him? Do you get it yet? These are republican hypocrites. Like Gov Christie doesnt believe in government help until HE needs them. So do you really think he changed principles? Or will he go back to believing the republican crap after he no longer needs government help?

(55,981 posts)being responsible for yourself, and if you neighbor needs help, you tell them they should have been better prepared, pull themselves up by their bootstraps, etc. republicans are not known for their empathy. It's easier to be self reliant if you are rich, white, male, and straight.
Now had Mr. Portman seen the light on his own, then great. But republicans think only of themselves and family, and money. I bet that should his son get abducted by aliens, heaven forbid, never to be seen again, Mr. Portman would revert back to his "republican" ways.
Gov Christie is also a republican and. Republicans are against government safety nets. Gov Christie changed his tune when he needed government help for his state. IMO he didnt "see the light" he is only being selfish and will scoff at the next state that wants government help.
Rep Portman and Gov Christie are, after all, republicans.

(55,981 posts)and everything is fine. And some here in DU will even celebrate not realizing that it's just words. Did their principles change? I wouldnt take their word for it. Portman most likely would change back if the situation changed again.

(9,186 posts)They HATE everything, unless they do it, or own it, or want to own it. Gay marriage is ok now because his son is gay. THAT is the only reason. This worthless prick knows Gay people has known gay people and has been vindictive to them in legislative efforts.
If he truly had "moral character" the great religious upbringing, and family values he so readily quotes, why doesn't he stand by God's judgment and disown his gay son?
If his son had remained closeted, this bigoted piece of shit would still be anti-gay.
He is the textbook Cafeteria Christian, Republican hypocrite, that's why he is pro gay marriage.

(3,502 posts)but it's a very good thing and worth celebrating. Because some other Republican's son or daughter will be more willing to come out to their parents and the more that happens, the more that LGBT rights become less a political football and more a simple reality of life.
