To the Druken Irishman....

Really? So a couple of Douchebags say you support priest molestation because you are Catholic and that has you heading to the hills.

No self respecting Druken Irishman that I know, including myself, would cut and run over comments made by some some anonymous keyboard knuckleheads.

Dude...if I quit every time someone insulted me here on DU, Earl would have to build a group just to handle my resignation posts.

Buck up Man, drink a pint or two, celebrate St. Patrick, and then get your ass back here.

what people are doing is challenging Catholics to say - please, show your support for women and homosexuals by doing something to send a message to the church powers-that-be in a way that others, outside of the church, can see.

Of course, I haven't read all the various threads, so I could be wrong.

On the other hand, at least one person here thought it was perfectly acceptable to label anyone who had anything to say against the church "fascists." More than one person. And not one person choose to dispute this claim (well, I did, after a while, just waiting to see if anyone else would say... that's not accurate) - so it goes both ways.

And I think that's what's causing so much turmoil - because the people who see that know they are well intentioned in their personal lives and they do care - so it's hurtful to on those grounds.

If both sides weren't devoted to the idea of social justice, the back and forth wouldn't have nearly the power that it does.

I had my moment - but it was about one person and his statement - but I framed what was being said in the terms that I think both sides are feeling. When I was labeled a fascist, the gloves were off - because you can't claim one side is trolling while the other gets a pass, especially on your own thread.

A lot of people who are most vehemently and vocally against religious this or that are also people who have endured abuse of various kinds from people who claim the mantle of religion for their actions and words. Not all of them, but more than a few. On a board like this, people are going to come across all sorts of other beliefs and questions about the same.

A lot of times I respond to people in the way they present themselves. If they start out with insults and name calling, they can expect the same. It's not because I think this is the only way to respond.

But I know it's best to take the higher ground.

None of us, I would guess, does this all the time.

I am very sorry for your experience and hope you know many will understand if you need to vent.

As to those who are doing this (blaming Catholic DUers for the horrendous actions of the Vatican and its hierarchy), in all honesty, I think it is more their total and absolute hostility towards all things religious- driving them. I'm sure they join me and all Duers in horror towards the pedophilia issues and coverup, but I honestly think that is NOT what is driving this behavior.

It may have been beer talking too, but that I don't remember.

Nevertheless, I'm still here and he's long gone.

When they throw me out of a Catholic Church for my heresies -- promoting birth control, supporting gay marriage, married and women priests, not tithing, expressing my anger at pedophile priests or the people who covered up for them, and otherwise speaking my mind -- I'll let everyone here know. But it hasn't happened yet.

It might be a crazy dream, but I think I have a better chance changing my Church, the Democratic Party, or the USA itself from within rather than without.

I voted on a jury to leave a post that thoroughly offended the language police around here. I was accused of promoting and supporting rape, and called every name in the book, not to mention that I should be banned for life. I was literally swarmed by people calling me things more offensive than the post I voted to let stand. Nasty group. Never went back to Meta again, and my affectionate feelings for DU never quite returned to those I previously had held.

...not just towards Catholic members. Some people just seem love to hate. Their comments sometimes astound me. They just make up reasons to hatefully attack a totally innocent comment. Either they are trolls, whose mission is to divide and conquer, or they're just disgruntled about something that has gone on in their personal lives that we know nothing about, or they just totally misunderstood what someone said. Another problem is that as Democrats, we have a tendency to not alert on personal attacks, since we are staunch believers in free speech. And if one does alert on a personal attack hater, the jurors turn out to be a majority of free speech sticklers, allowing the hateful post to stand, which gives the hater power to live another day to continue the hate. Maybe hate speech should be considered the same as calling "FIRE" in a crowded theater? Personally, when I run up on a hate argument slug-fest, I do not pass go, I do not rec. I immediately back out of the thread and let them go at it. I'm one of those who support free speech, so I don't alert very much. Am I as guilty as the hate posters? Catch-22.

On conservative/right-wing message boards, they accuse DU'ers and our ilk as monsters/idiots/commies who hate our country. Remove "commie" and insert "fascist" ands you've a pretty good sampling of what DU'ers think about conservatives.

The Church is an anomaly in that the official teachings condemn abortion and the gay lifestyle, yet touts preferential treatment for the poor and social justice. If you're a conservative OR liberal Catholic (I am the latter), a thick skin is required. I've only been on DU a short time. but am no stranger to message boards. We say some outlandish shit on occasion to people we would never...ever...say to a person's face (yeah, bullshit you know you wouldn't either in a lot of cases). Par for the course and can be attributed to the relative distance and anonymity of the internet.

From everything that's been said, as a Catholic (but sober) Irishman, I hope DI comes back.

Mon Mar 18, 2013, 12:54 PM

But that's not the case. The men (!) who run the Church and raped children and/or covered up the raping of children have been exposed as the vile excremental moral lepers they are. The Church, when officially declaiming on the subject, has never condoned the murdering of the souls of children. So those Catholics who remain affiliated with the faith are not supportive of an institution that promulgates the crime and, I'm sure, are hopeful that time and continued public exposure and censure will bring about a purge of the Roman clergy, and a cleansing of its soul.

I'm not one of those who stuck around. Even while a Catholic, I never felt the love for the idea of a catholic church, nor for the idea of the Catholic church that its members seem still to feel. (Although I have to say that the Church of Rome has lost 10's if not 100's of millions of its faithful over the last 30 years, partly because of child rape, partly because of its loathing of sexuality, and to a smaller part because of its domination by males who have no interest in sharing the power of the priesthood with women.)
