Father ordered to wear sign saying he didn't pay child support

The NAACP is looking into a case where a father was ordered by a Scott County judge to wear a sign stating he hasn’t paid child support, according to a report by WJTV.

The father, Otis Lloyd, will have to wear the sign stating “I haven’t paid child support and I’m in contempt of court,” until he can pay more than $13,000 he owes.

Chancery Judge David Clark ordered Lloyd to wear that sign for three hours, three days a week until he pays his debt, WJTV reported. Judge Clark said that he will not comment on the case.

Lloyd’s mother, Mary Lloyd, told WJTV that her son has cancer and shouldn’t be forced to stay outside the courthouse with his sign.

I think the state using humiliation as punishment is wrong. I don't believe any judge should pass this kind of judgment

but a lot of people are put in jail for failure to pay child support. My point was this was better than jail, maybe a little shame will motivate his behind to do his responsibilities.

$13,000 in arrears suggests this is one hardcore deadbeat dad.

Note: if he's unemployed, he can seek a downward modification.

4. It seems to me that wearing that sign might interfere with his ability to get or hold a job

Which would make it harder, not easier, for him to actually pay child support.

It seems counterproductive, senseless, and vindictive.

I don't give a shit what sign he has to wear. He should have been signing some checks for his children.

As soon as the court caught up with him and started garnishing his wages he quit his job and went and got another one. I think wearing a sign wouldn't be punishment enough for an asshole like that.

on child support payments should NOT be sent to jail or prison!

They need to work FULL time on the books, and get their salaries garnished relatively to what they owe.

Having taxpayers pay for him to be in jail or prison seems rather counterproductive, the mothers and their children need the money, not the prison money machine.
