I want to see what all the fuss is about

So I talked to my husband and we decided we're going to go shooting next weekend. He called a friend who has a lot of property and a .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle; though a variety of weapons will be there (I'll pass on the shotgun). Since we'll be watching my SIL next weekend she'll be going with us. She's shot before but this will probably be her first time with a .223 as well.

When I told him what I wanted to do he got *that glint* in his eye. I post more as events warrant (about going shooting, not the glint in his eye).

Didn't want you to go off half-cocked.

'Cause that would be like, um, bad and stuff.

I will rub the buddah and pray when the stars are just right for you so that, unlike the 50 million other people who own guns, you won't become a mass killer.

50 freaking million are out there, it's like the walking dead but these ones have guns. I had to dodge bullets on the way to the store today.

It is a crisis and we need someone to save us. Don't go shooting or you too will become one of 'them' I have to be afraid of.

I didn't post here to be antagonistic but let's face facts, the rules have been rather lax lately. If something as disturbed as Michael Moore's letter or calls for CA's gun confiscation policy to be expanded to those not adjudicated guilty of any offense can survive then I would hope equal time/leniency would be the policy of those moderating.

If my thread is to be sent to the "gungeon" (how telling is that sobriquet?) then so be it but it would be equally fair to send the others as well lest there be an appearance that one side of the debate is to be granted a broader audience the other is not.

to think about it and put a date together and do it.

stay safe. your hubby knows what he is doing. that is the big thing for me.

have fun. there is a fun in target. i have done pellet and bb often. i like it. naturally competitive.

and not a big deal over all. so.... not much more to say on the subject.

when my MIL died she left her .22 pistol to me. Since we'll be taking my SIL with us she get to shoot her mom's pistol for the first time since her mother passed. It carries a heavy emotional signifigance for us both but I feel privileged to be a part of it.

Sounds like your husband is safety conscious and knows what he is doing. It can be a bunch of fun target shooting.

This past Sunday was a gorgeous day here. Hubby and I went out shooting for about three hours; probably spent less than an hour shooting, and remainder talking and catching up from the past week.

Can't wait to see if you enjoy it or not!

As I'm sure your husband and friend are aware, adequate eye and hearing protection is vital, stay safe and have a great time.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever fired a gun before?

He's ex-Army and VERY safety conscious. The first time we went shooting he made me remember all the parts of the gun by name and be able to point them out quickly as he called them out to me; the rationale being, if anything peculiar occurred I could quickly handle it -- with guidance -- without fumbling the weapon.

I then had to remember the safety rules, i.e. assume it's always loaded, never point it at anything you don't want to destroy, finger off the trigger until it's time to shoot, etc. At first his sternness and being a stickler for details almost seemed overbearing to the point of being comical (he's normally a very laid-back person) but once we were on the range and I had a gun in my hand I felt more confident for it.

And yes, PPE will be utilized.
