Her stupid remark in SF has caused most of her tour dates to be cancelled.

(60,014 posts)I liked that genre (Suzanne Vega et al), and never purchased any of her stuff - only time I heard some songs was on WXPN in Phila (they seemed to like her)

I'm pretty sure I remember that she played during the Madison, WI protests.

(56,177 posts)Well, that's too bad. As a performer with 45 years of shows behind me, I've had walk-outs when I sang about interracial couples, and when I sang about AIDS, and walkouts more recently when I sang about gay marriage. I am the first to argue that I have a right to sing and speak about those things on stage, just as the audience has the right to walk out, object to the management, and ask for their money back if they feel deceived.
Our country is in large part founded on the concept of free speech - the right to speak your mind politically and socially. But there is a huge difference between "Free speech" and "Hate speech." It is sad when a talented person chooses to use that talent in the service of their own misplaced rage, and their disappointment in their own life. I often wonder if people like this die and meet God, who will smack them upside the head and say "Did I really LOOK like I needed your help?!"
And isn't it odd to see someone who was so woman-identified turn a 360 degree like this? Then again, "Hell hath no fury..."

(3,539 posts)Less now that she has outed herself as one of the loonies.
Although I, and probably you, may think she should have remembered that she was their to make music, not statements, I wonder.
Is her 'speaking her mind', all that much different from Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, the Dixie Chicks.
No, I'm not making excuses for her.
Yes I know I might take some flack for this.
I'm just saying that if someone wishes to yell fire in a crowded theater we must allow for that and any consequences they may incur, weather we agree or not.
It's not important if I think she showed poor judgment.
It's not important if I believe in live and let live.
If Michelle Shocked sinks further into obscurity it will be from her own doing.
Maybe she should have remembered she was their to make music, not statements.

(8,692 posts)"Michelle Shocked stunned last night in San Franciscoand not at all in a good way.
"I live in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry," the 51-year-old singer-songwriter reportedly told an appalled crowd at live-music venue Yoshi's.
She summed up by saying, "You can go on Twitter and say Michelle Shocked says God hates f-gs,'" according to Matt Penfield, who was live-tweeting the show from the stage. "all cool. 2nd set, she got up went full hate speech," he wrote."

Maybe she can find some gigs playing Klan Rallies, homophobic church socials, and the Puke Convention.

(1,922 posts)No booking agent will dare to be the first to book her on any subsequent 'tour' that she might fantasize about.
It is over for Ms Shocked. Maybe she can get a gig at that fundie church she hangs out at. She was raised Mormon, but has gone over to the Pentecost.

(13,905 posts)I'm curious as to how many people she had on tour with her, who likely just lost their income.
I would think there would be at least a couple or a few people. Tour manager, roadies?

(12,530 posts)You just know she'll end up playing some 'bagger venue, and they'll all need to pretend they love her music, when they're actually just grooving on hate. It should be an uncomfortable scene all around.

(12,151 posts)There's an article out there somewhere where she came out as gay but lamented that she didn't really fit in any category or something like that. She was raised Mormon and I wonder if she didn't struggle with sexual orientation identity for a long time and maybe... I don't know ... develop neurosis?
Not an excuse necessarily, but maybe a reason?

(8,028 posts)...that she is probably not a well woman.
I've always loved Michelle Shocked and I hate to see her self destruct in this manner. I've seen her in concert several times; once backstage with my girlfriend in Salt Lake City. She used to be gay. She used to be cool.
She's been on an anti-gay tirade for several years now. I just looked the other way when she spewed homophobia in 2011. To watch her do a total homophobic implosion in 2013 is just sad.
She seems to be unhinged. I hope she gets the help she needs.
