Steve Kornacki To Host MSNBC Weekend Show ‘Up’

Steve Kornacki has been tapped to host "Up" on weekend mornings, taking over the program from Chris Hayes, MSNBC announced Tuesday.

“I want to thank Chris Hayes and his team for creating a totally original and incredibly smart model for political television,” Kornacki, who also writes for Salon, said in a written statement. “It’s a real honor and a real challenge to take his seat, and I’m excited by the chance to foster the same kind of lively and diverse conversations. Mainly, though, I’m looking forward to spending four hours each weekend with the @UpPastryPlate.”

"Up" airs 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. ET Saturdays and Sundays. Starting in April, Hayes will move his program to the 8 p.m. ET slot. Hayes said on Twitter he was excited to pass the torch:

Christopher Hayes ✔ @chrislhayes

Psyched to pass the UP franchise to @SteveKornacki . #uppers are in excellent hands.

Salon Expects Steve Kornacki To Continue Writing For Site

DAVID TAINTOR 2:23 PM EDT, TUESDAY MARCH 19, 2013
Salon expects Steve Kornacki, who on Tuesday was tapped to take over the MSNBC weekend morning show "Up" from Chris Hayes, to keep writing for the progressive news site.

Salon Editor in Chief Kerry Lauerman told TPM in an email: "Very much expect Steve to continue writing for Salon -- we'll figure out how much he can do in the next few weeks."

Hayes took the title of editor-at-large at the Nation after assuming hosting duties at MSNBC. Kornacki is currently a co-host of the MSNBC weekday afternoon program "The Cycle" and a senior writer at Salon.

Obviously, I am happy to see Chris every night, but I had hoped he would be replaced by somebody who cares about issues.

for two hours each day. It has been one of the smartest programs with the least opportunities for people to demagogue on it. I consider Kornacki to be a conservative who just hasn't cut his fangs yet. I keep waiting for them to appear. UP has lost me.

Sorry, I think of him in the same way as Ezra Klein. Okay in short doses, but I don't know about a 2 hour stretch.

I like Steve! He's an excellent choice to replace Chris (if Chris had to be replaced - he's done a great job with UP). I say we give Steve a chance. He was the only one worth listening to on The Cycle. He's smart and seems to have a pretty open mind.
