"Speaking of younger women [under the age of 30], a solid majority of them (58 percent) identify as feminists as did 54 percent of older women, nearly three-quarters (72 percent) of Democratic women and a respectable 38 percent of Republican women. The feminist factor cuts across race and ethnic lines, with a majority of Latina, African American and white women voters considering themselves feminists."
Moreover, the study found that women of color are more likely to call themselves feminists. Almost three quarters of Latin-American women and 66% of African American female voters self-identify as feminists.

The president of the FMF, Eleanor Smeal, explained that the survey results highlight the significant and pivotal role of feminists as an interest group in US politics:
"As we move forward after the elections of 2012, its time to acknowledge that it wasn't just women who made a critical different in reelecting President Barack Obama, but feminists. Its time to add another metric beyond the gender gap to our post-election analysis: the Feminist Factor."

(115,103 posts)I long for the day when women embrace the term and aren't scared off by stupid propaganda. We saw it happen with lefties... doing the same thing with feminism is my passion.

(24,721 posts)Never before have I seen such an opportunity given to the women's movement than the absurd, backward infringements coming from the Republicans & this is the first indication that I've seen that it's not being squandered.
As long as the feminists outside of DU don't go full-throttle in clouding these important issues with minutia & keep the focus on what's important, I hope something significant comes from it.

(3,678 posts)An ex of mine once told me that when she was in undergrad (early '90s) a prof asked a lecture audience to indicate whether or not they would identify as feminists by a show of hands and only a few people raised their arms. She was stunned and discouraged or disappointed or maybe even angry. Next time we catch up I'll have to tell her this!
