I've lost two of my aunts to breast cancer recently--vibrant women in their 40s.
In their honor I wrote the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and told them that I could no longer support their organization. They have put politics over the health of American Women and they no longer deserve my support.
If you have a minute, I would ask you to join me in letting them know how terrible their decision is to stop funding breast exams in their partnership with Planned Parenthood.

If you have another minute, a prayer for my dear Aunt Barbara would be appreciated as well. She's a wonderful lady whose cancer has come back.
In her honor I will be writing a check to Planned Parenthood with a request that the money go towards breast exams.

(4,359 posts)I wrote my post and sat looking at it for a long, long, long time because I didn't know what to do with the hurt all this has caused. And then it clicked...I could still support breast exams and skip Susan G. Koman. Besides, after seeing the CEO of Koman makes almost half a million dollars a year AND the VP is a right-to-lifer...well...Koman didn't seem like a good choice for me anymore anyway. Half a million dollars pays for a LOT of breast exams!!! And, the last thing I want to do is help pay the wages of a right-wing VP who is using Koman to further her right-wing agenda.
Planned Parenthood will spend my money much more wisely, I am thinking.

(12,253 posts)I understand how disappointed you are with the Koman Foundation's hard right turn. Susan was from this area and could be seen out and about almost to the end of her life. One of my dear friends found a lump, and because of Susan went to early diagnosis and treatment and she is happy and healthy five years out. She does the charity walks for the Komen Foundation every year. Susan G. Koman wanted women to find breast cancer early. The earlier it is found the better chance the person (not always women) has for complete recovery. Susan was well loved in these parts and a lot of people are mourning her all over again because of this.
Planned Parenthood is first and foremost about women's health and they always have been. They do the heavy lifting. You are wise to support them directly.

(4,359 posts)That too is great!!!!! I am feeling much better about things already!
I had heard about the hearts and everyone is excited about it. We can make a big difference and a strong political statement at the same time! I predict hearts by everyone's name by Valentine's Day! Hang onto that good feeling. You deserve a good stretch and a smile.
