(46,436 posts)...and you probably won't believe this...Alaska's current governor is so bad, I almost miss Sarah.

(75,480 posts)I don't keep up with your politics although I have a special warm spot in my heart for your state. Is maybe your new governor stuck with things she did that are just coming to a head and getting blamed for them? Or is he just an idiot on his own?
I dunno, why do Alaskans, (not you I know) keep voting for Republicans. They do nothing for you ordinary folks because they are busy making the commercial interests operating there happy. Idahoans have the same problem in a state with similar demographics and geography, just not as frozen. In the case of Idaho, it's the Mormons who influence everything and they are all Republicans.

(46,436 posts)In 2007 after quite a few of our state legislators were sent to prison for accepting bribes from the Big Oil companies (see "Corrupt Bastards Club" , Sarah and the Democrats passed an oil bill called ACES, which stands for Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share. We are an owner state meaning that our resources (the oil in the ground) are owned collectively by the people of the state. ACES assured that when oil prices went up, Alaska would get a fair return.
Under Governor Parnell's plan, which just passed our gerrymandered Senate, Alaska will give the Big Oil companies the equivalent of $2,000 a minute on the HOPE that they will increase production. This is basically money NOT going into our general fund to pay for education, health care, and other state services. The oil companies have promised nothing in return so basically they can take the money they're not paying Alaska for our oil and spend it anywhere they choose and we get nothing.
It's more complicated than that, of course, but suffice to say he's giving away the farm. He was formerly a ConocoPhillips lobbyist and in fact worked for the law firm that represented Exxon during the spill litigation.
While putting all his trust into CP, BP and Exxon to do right by Alaskans, he's turned down the Medicaid expansion because he doesn't trust the federal gov't. Every time we turn around he's suing the Feds for "over-reach."
I could go on, but he's ALEC and Club for Growth to the core. And a religious fundie besides. Just a truly despicable human being.

(75,480 posts)probably go that way too. You know she bends with the wind and it's not your wind but the Republican oligarchy who keeps her around. We ended our gerrymandering sort of here in California and for the first time in twenty years our districts are more geometrically drawn by geography not demography. It got me into a Democrat's district after twenty years of toxic Republicans. I really think gerrymandering should be outlawed. Also, I remember Alaska before the pipeline. I don't think big oil has done good by you.
Well, I guess to fight another day.

(46,436 posts)I would gladly go back to those days ... paying a state income tax and not receiving a permanent fund dividend ... to have those assholes out of our government business. I really don't know how many more times we need to get screwed by them before our government wakes up. Just last year a US District Court judge ruled that Alaska's government has been almost criminally trusting when dealing with the Majors. And now this SB 21 which will give them, with no strings attached, $6 billion or more over the next five years. It's just insane.
