Just heard a nasty story about Susan G Komen Foundation

My friend's sister died of breast cancer last year. An artist friend of the family designed jewelry dedicated to her sister and found a jewelry company to make it. The jewelry company agreed to donate the proceeds and the family suggested the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Susan G. Komen refused to accept the donation because the jeweler was also donating (through a different campaign) to causes supporting women's heart disease.

Komen said they would only accept the donations if the donor agreed to stop raising money for heart disease.

That's just insane.

I recommend Breast Cancer Action to anyone interested in donating to a breast-cancer nonprofit, and thinkbeforeyoupink.org to learn more about the pink-washing crapfest that goes on every October.

Which should be obvious because she's a Republican and a significant donor to them.

Parasites. All of them. I went through my house and disposed of any pink ribbons.

A friend of mine works at a school that allows you to wear a cap on Friday's if you donate $1 for R4C. She says she is going to wear her cap on Friday and tell them she refuses to donate, but did make her donation to PP directly.

If she doesn't chicken out, will let you know how that went!

If you think this criminal outfit EVER did any good you're kidding yourselves. I've never given one penny to Komen and I never will. They are less likely to find a cure for cancer than I am, and about as interested in finding a cure for cancer as BP is in developing a car that runs on water.

My wife is a stage 4 survivor. 4 years now. One experience with the "walk for the cure" taught us all we needed to know about this foundation's true goal.

If you are a cancer patient, and do not raise enough money, you don't get to walk in their "walk."

My wife schooled me on the Susan G. Komen Foundation's real goals. I should have learned from when I was in management at a major retailer in the '80's and we were expected to pressure our employees to donate a portion of their wages to another charity aggregator, until a news story broke exposing that their interests had nothing to do with unity, or a way.

My dear CaliforniaPeggy, I eschew cynicism. I really do. It's hard, though, when you know there is need, and you've seen so many times people getting ripped off in spite of their best intentions.

TLDR: I'm sorry.

I don't mind bluntness. This organization has been very unethical for a long time and I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that.

Of course, this was easy because the fundraiser was very, very well respected and people were willing to "help". This will make that type of generosity a very difficult sell in a non-partisan way.

The Komen foundation has truly shot itself in the foot on many levels. People like me wont participate anymore. Neither would I donate to anyone who does decide to participate in the future and I'll be pretty vocal in my condemnation of the walk/run/Komen organization. A real triple whammy for them.

Their politicization of this cause is unbelievable. I suspect they have no idea how badly this will rebound on them financially and reputation-wise. Organizations like MADD, Livestrong and others survive because the message is pretty good and NON-PARTISAN.

Once you cross that boundary it's hard to go back....

something about it didn't set well with me. The crass commercialism, maybe? I'm not sure. I just didn't get a warm, fuzzy feeling about the org.

Some of the other big groups, like United Way, strike me that way.
