Better than Komen - Add yours

Komen is a juggernaut that has captured donations for breast cancer research and they have controlled what kind of research is done. This has left those investigating environmental causes with meager funds.

Here is one that does investigate environmental causes - and they are not beholding to corporate interests: http://www.silentspring.org/

Years ago, a research scientist was conducting a study on breast cancer. She had placed breast cancer cells in some new plastic test tubes. When they came in to work in the following days, the breast cancer cells were multiplying. Eventually, they determined it was the chemicals in the plastic test tubes that was causing this. This began investigations into the many exposures women experience and the possible role of contributing to breast cancer and other cancers.

Komen has become a republican organization that is pursuing replublican policies.

1. We should make a list of organizations which do similar work as SGK

I just read on another thread that the National Breast Cancer Foundation has better ratings for how they use funds than SGK. There were others. Just because SGK is better at branding and promotions doesn't mean its the only foundation out there supporting breast cancer awareness and research.

It's nice to know you can continue to give something every day that adds up nicely over time, and multiplied by a few hundred thousand people (or more) becomes quite substantial.

6. Why not just support

Planned Parenthood in general? They do a lot of great work, and they talk about other types of cancer and research, like uterine cancer, endometriosis, and more. At this point, an overwhelming support effort to PP alone, or NARAL, or NOW, will strengthen the charitable work that each of these does, and make sure SGK knows of the switched contributions.

Really, it'll be like a major mosquito bite to Komen to know that the real people in the country think of their shifting alliances, and some of their donations from other progressive will bever reach the heights again, until something changes on that end of their political work.

Planned Parenthood - they actually help people in the area of medical care.

Research into the causes and prevention of cancer is important too. Komen scoops up most of the research money with their huge PR campaign that corporations are part of. Those corporations would not appreciate having their products investigated for possible contributing factors to breast or any other cancer. Komen is not big on environmental research. Other organizations do research environmental factors but they do not have much money to do their research.
