4-year-old girl fatally shot in car in Miami

Authorities say a 4-year-old girl was fatally shot while she was sitting in a car, and detectives are investigating whether another young child inside the car fired the gun.

Miami-Dade Police say Rahquel Carr was shot in the upper body Saturday at about 6:10 p.m. She was airlifted to a hospital, where she died.

Detective Roy Rutland said Sunday that the girl was waiting in a white Mercedes-Benz with at least two other children when she was shot. All the children are believed to have been younger than 10.

Rutland says the handgun was fired from inside the car while an adult stood outside the vehicle nearby.

The Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney is reviewing the case to determine if anyone will be charged.

Since there wasn't a "good guy" with a gun nearby, it's unfortunate the 4 year old did not have a weapon available to defend herself.

And by all means, don't charge the person who left a loaded gun in a car with children. It was just a tragic mistake, and I'm sure he's very traumatized by the whole thing.

Best to let him wipe the slate clean of his "mistake," and have his wife pop out a new replacement.

Better training and more discipline surely would have prevented this tragedy.

Leaving a gun where small kids can get it - and in a car no less. That could have been prevented.
