It's gotten to the point where politicians and pundits on both sides say things they KNOW full well are going to piss of thousands of people, just so their base will reelect them or keep watching.
It's gotten to the point where most political blogs are just compendiums of all the most outrageous things everyone on either side said today, just so we can all have a good RAGE--either by ourselves, or with the trolls in the comment sections.
It's gotten to the point where people are angry all the time, but they choose to pass on their anger to others by goading them into also being outraged, or being outraged that their opponents are so outraged, or being outraged that no one is outraged enough.
It's gotten to the point where people quote the "Mad as Hell" monologue from Network as though they don't actually realize it's satire, when of course it is. Well, these are neither the best of times nor the worst of the times, just like practically always. And the fact is, most people on the national stage aren't actually this outraged in real life, even (or especially) the people who get paid to do it.
I was a little fatigued from the outrage, and I just realized--the most subversive thing you can do today is to think before you speak or type, put up a good logical counter-argument, think about your opponents as actual human beings and not the vile sacks-o-crap their salaried spokespeople want you to think they are.
The most boring thing you can do? Get mad.

(19,841 posts)but unfortunately we're being forced to fight for everything, all the time. Nothing in this divided country is achieved without a fight to the death now. If we aren't outraged and show it, they will take it all. I don't think I have to define who the (real) takers are.

(1,850 posts)Take up a new hobby. Spend time with friends who are apolitical. Read more escapist fiction. We are okay for now. There's a long time til the next election, and by that time you will feel refreshed and re-energized, and ready for more.

A short break might be in order, but not paying attention and doing what you can is incredibly stupid.

(10,725 posts)and you're on the road to sickness, inside and out. Seldom does it do anybody any good, as much as we like to romanticize "righteous anger".
Most people everywhere are good at heart, love their family, are honest, hard-working, and more likely to lend a hand to help than to harm. If you start from there, you can face most of what needs to be faced with some effectiveness.

(20,166 posts)It's going by at the speed of light, it seems. Anger and outrage have their place, but to become consumed by them only turns your consciousness toxic.
I've pretty much chosen to avoid participating in a lot of the outrage threads here at DU, especially, or ignoring anyone who apparently has some ax to grind over something I've posted (which I don't do much of anymore, any way). I'm not talking about honest disagreement and discussion. It's those with some kind of perpetual chip on the their shoulder that I just don't have much time for anymore.

(2,467 posts)People who are always outraged by something are tiresome to be around. I tend to avoid people who are always complaining about something. Life is too short for that.

(5,937 posts)even after your well thought message and one I happen to agree with. It is still outrage for all too many, and the endless justification to hate and be pissed off all the time.

(12,081 posts)on what's wrong we will come to the end of our life realizing we didn't take enough time to be grateful and appreciate all of the beautiful things and people we do have in our lives. Life is short. Hug the special people in your life and laugh sometimes. It is good for the mind, body, and spirit.

(1,362 posts)Many people act as if the emotion-based propaganda, designed to incite them, is the same as rational thinking. Of course those same people become outraged when presented with the idea that they are believing and repeating propaganda too.
We live in a culture of corruption, lies and crimes rule, deception is mainstream and greed is no. 1.
