Posted: 04/02/2013 5:24 pm EDT
The cable news industry was hit with another month of tough ratings news.
Every network saw its ratings drop from 2012, a politics-heavy election year that was guaranteed to spike audiences. In primetime, Fox News suffered the biggest plunge, falling 33 percent from its 2012 numbers. CNN fell a nearly equally precipitous 28 percent, while MSNBC dropped 4 percent.
Fox News, which has had several well-publicized ratings issues over the past few months, saw its primetime numbers fall to new lows in the all-important A25-54 category for many shows. MSNBC gloated in its press release, saying that hosts Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren had their worst demo ratings ever. Bill O'Reilly's demo ratings were also off by 26 percent.

MSNBC topped CNN in total viewers and demo viewers, and saw a 30 percent increase in daytime viewers in the A25-54 demo.

(26,060 posts)but doesn't explain the increase in MSNBC's numbers. But there are many reasons for the dip for fox - their viewers are literally dying off, the teabag brigade thinks they've gone too liberal and many were very pissed with the landslide predictions of morris, hannity, barrone. Their viewers actually believe they know what they're talking about and were blindsided by the election. Put on a hazmat suit and view a conservative board. You'll laugh yourself silly.

CNN is not the CNN it was once ...Ted Turner made a good news network. It is now FOX News in disguise.
Glad Soledad O'brien has left it. anyone know where she went to? I hope MSNBC grabs her.

(481 posts)I think Fox is doomed. Fox's audience has already begun complaining that Fox is taking a liberal turn. Most people want nothing to do with them knowing they're just right wing propaganda. So if they try to go more mainstream they'll piss off the loonies. And their audience are all 70 something, along with Murdoch who still has more than his share of legal problems in the UK. These guy are in a corner. I love it!

(10,893 posts)how much lower FOX's ratings would be if their viewers didn't buy the "liberal media" lie. The only reason why they've been top-rated so far has been because most of the wingnuts still see any network not named "FOX News" as liberal. Thus they garner an overwhelming majority of the wingnut viewership, while liberal and moderate viewership is diluted among the other cable news networks.

I'd project that there are also more liberal and moderate users that then use the internet for their news. Such as I. I find it so much more superior as you can pick and choose which stories you want to inform yourself more about, and you can find out about now, not "after this message". We only have so much time in this busy world.
TV news has long past as an efficient way to gather your news. Its more about info-tainment. Its a spectacle where newscasters are celebrities themselves, and there is very little in-depth analysis especially on network news shows.

(10,033 posts)Eventually, MSNBC and Fox will pass on the political axis and the parties will have new favorites...MSNBC for the right wing and the "new" Fox for the centrists - don't for one second think that the shifts will EVER be to a legitimate left.

Look at the P2+ column. It's for all viewers over the age of 2. The data shows that a lot of people tune in for O'Reilly, but leave for the rest of the night.
