What happens to Whistle-Blowers when they are not vindicated?

The discontinuation of the Lance Armstrong probe got me to thinking about What happens to whistle-blowers when the government or legal authorities don't DO ANYTHING with the information you give them.

That is really a bad situation for the Whistleblower, because you came out and put your butt on the line, lost your job and reputation, and you are trying to tell the truth, and you have nothing to gain and everything to lose... And then, the powers that be tell you to essentially get lost and leave you to hang slowly in the breeze.

You could argue that it is essential to "come clean" for the sake of one's conscience, but that can be done in private without the public scandal of it all. I just feel bad for people who try to tell the truth and are buried in the sand for it.

You nailed it, and that's what happens to many who ARE vindicated... it doesn't protect them saras Feb 2012 #1
