I had hit a brick wall with Obama a couple years ago. It seemed he could do nothing in the face of Republican opposition, which, while I completely understood, doesn't do much for confidence. Obama over the course of his presidency has, and continues to do questionable and sometimes downright wrong things. NDAA, kicking the bush tax cuts down the road, stopping an EPA regulation, and his continued closeness with a Wall street determined to hate his very existence made me for a couple years not approve of how the president is handling his job.
I was always going to vote for him again, but the love had faded.
Recently, the love came back. And I will be downright honest, it was because I saw the alternatives. It came out into the sunlight what the other side wants to do to us, and its disgusting. It is downright scary. Everything about the "candidates" makes me fear living in this country if they are elected. And seeing these candidates makes me realize exactly what Obama has been facing the past 3 years. Hundreds of capable, rabid animals, who will stop at nothing to sate their corporate masters. The vast amount of hatred makes it a miracle we didn't go backwards, as the president is only one man. Yet we went forward, not on everything. Maybe not even most things. But on crucial issues we moved in the correct direction.
Looking back it seems like the President was all alone. Yet he kept trucking for us, for the people who stopped defending him. And now, make no mistake. He needs us. He needs our help. He needs our votes, our time, our effort. He needs a friendlier senate and congress. And we need him, more than ever. The barbarians are at the gate.

(18,402 posts)It has seemed to me over the past two years that the Congressional Democrats have really left him out there dangling a lot of the time, without a lot of support. Reid can't get his caucus together enough to unblock Republicans on mostly economic things (talking to you Nelson, Baucus et al), and seems happy to let Obama take the blame for it. Pelosi seems content to let her minority sit back and take the high road while losing everything to the House Republicans, and again letting Obama take the heat for it.
When are they going to come out and get this guy's back a bit? It seems like Senate and House Democrats are more worried about themselves and their own reelections--just reducing their exposure in this era of backlash against government--than in supporting the Executive Branch. It almost seems to me that they don't care if a Romney is elected as long as they can gain back control in the House or Senate, respectively and block him from doing anything bad. This will be endless stasis if this is how we are proceeding in Washington.

This question has probably crossed the mind of President Barack Obama as he has watched nominee after nominee of his not get approved by the Senate, even though Democrats are in charge. Republicans, although in the minority, have used delaying tactics to stall many of the nominees, particularly judicial appointees. Their strategy appears to be to leave court positions vacant in hopes that a Republican will be elected president in November.
Last year, the Senate confirmed 57% of Obama's appointments. From 2007 through 2009, however, the Democratic-controlled upper house approved 67% of President George W. Bush's selections.

With entrenched Democrats like we have in Congress, who needs obstructionist Republicans?

(15,438 posts)We also need to remember to flush out Congress of filibuster-happy GOP and Teapublicans because that's where the GOP is focused, not the presidency.
The presidency is only a means to get more corporate lackeys on SCOTUS, but the real fight is in Congress.

I guess too many were still suffering under the dictatorship-like presidency of Cheney/Bush, and it took them some time to come out of it.

And I couldn't agree more! I think like most people who voted for him I sometimes wish he had been tougher or done more, but I cannot deny what he has accomplished in 3 years and I look forward to the next 4.
He is a good American, a good family man, and his smile s adorable!!
