Two Chechins plant a bomb that kills three, injures a hundred and fifty or so, and the entire city of Boston is on lockdown.
Some faceless plant owners allow a huge explosion to happen, killing dozens, wounding hundreds, and they'll undoubtedly never serve a day in jail.
Am I missing something?
Careless capitalism is just shrugged off, even though it does far more damage than the deliberate terrorists. I'm not defending the Boston bombers, but there's a proportionality here that's a little disturbing.

(28,581 posts)They've killed a cop, hijacked a car, robbed a store and the brother who was killed threw bombs at the cops and had on a fucking suicide vest so YES
They shut down a city where most people walk, kids take public transit to school.
WTF
Seriously, the people who fucking live here are not upset. They are staying inside and letting the cops do their jobs.

(23,156 posts)Or Jews? Or atheists? I take it the assumption is that all Muslims are by definition terrorists, but whatever local good ole boys do in Texas is always okay.
My point is, while again I'm not remotely condoning what they did, what happened in Texas is vastly worse, at least in numbers of actual human beings killed and maimed.
I'll bet that next year the Boston Marathon will be run without any spectators allowed, at least not in the last mile or so, while the fertilizer plant will rebuild. Without adequate safety inspections.

(14,881 posts)Tragic, but not really unexpected.
The other is the 99% turning on each other, started with an 2 unexpected bomb explosions at a high profile event in front of international teevee and phone cameras, an activist hero behaving heroically on film, a manhunt, a carjacking, multiple car chases and shootouts, a terrorist armed with bombs at large, 4 miles of road littered with IEDs, all in a major, famous historic city.
Face it. It fucking reads like a novel. Or script for a blow-it-up, car chase action movie.

(135,425 posts)the robbery of the 7-11 and the continued manhunt for the remaining Chechen, who just might be wearing a suicide vest with the capability of killing more people.
Are those plant owners on the run, armed and dangerous?
How do you know that "undoubtedly" they will "never serve a day in jail?"
You don't think the federal government will press charges at some point?
I don't agree with your "proportionality" argument at all. Sloth, greed and carelessness are NOT THE SAME as the deliberate infliction of intentional harm on an innocent population for the purposes of terror. That greedy, lazy plant owner didn't set out to kill people, and he isn't on the lam.
It's just a poor analogy.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)So if I accidentally kill dozens or even hundreds, it's not as bad as deliberately killing one.
To me, each life is equally worthwhile. Careless murder is at least as bad as deliberate murder.
MADem
(135,425 posts)This was no "accident." It was deliberate infliction of intentional harm.
As a Bostonian, I find your clueless comments obtuse and objectionable.
And that's the polite way of putting it.
Get down off the soapbox, no one wants to hear that shit. You're embarrassing yourself.

(12,723 posts)First, the plant owners are KNOWN. They are not FUGITIVES.
Second, there has not yet been a thorough investigation of the explosion to determine fault so unless you got the last fucking crystal ball that works there is not yet any proof of CRIMINAL wrong-doing.
I agree corporate criminals get away with too much in this country but your analogy is rotten.

(29,082 posts)For one thing, how do you know that the "faceless plant owners" will "undoubtedly' never serve a day in jail?
Probably not a good day for shark jumping or expounding on the evils of capitalism, careless or otherwise.
Just sayin'.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)but in all of the past similar incidents, the corporate owners never face any consequences.

Not quite sure how you definitely know that the fertilizer plant's
owner(s) will never serve any jail-time, if found criminally negligent
of something, but hey, maybe I'm clueless....
Accidents happen - a far cry from two nut-jobs who deliberately
manufacture a pair of IEDs, place them, then detonate them in
the midst of a national event...

You seem to be trivializing this tragedy.

(23,156 posts)There is wall-to-wall coverage of events in Boston. Texas? Yawn, people died and were injured, no big deal. At least that's what I'm getting from the difference in coverage.
