Country singer Randy Travis arrested for public intoxication ... in front of a Baptist church

RANDY TRAVIS
Arrested for Public Intoxication

http://www.tmz.com/2012/02/06/randy-travis-arrested-public-intoxication/#.TzAJjsVSSNQ

Country singer Randy Travis was arrested in Dallas this morning for public intoxication ... after cops say he was boozing in front of a Baptist church.

According to the Sanger Police Department, someone called the cops to report a suspicious vehicle near the church ... and when officers arrived to the scene, they discovered the 52-year-old singer with an open bottle of wine.

The "Forever and Ever, Amen" singer was hauled to a nearby jail around 1:30 AM -- he was booked, cited and released a short time later.

He's no competition for the Jason Aldean crowd. Too old.

I know at least some Baptists are "dry" but don't know if it's (supposed to be) all of them.

I'm detecting some cultural subtext that I'm just not wired into, being an NYC-area atheist ex-Catholic.

and it sure seemed to me they disagreed with all alcohol use. Let me say, they preached against it.

My cousins are methodist and I was visiting one last summer and he told me this joke:

Why do you always invite at least 2 baptists to go fishing with you?

Because if you only invite one, he'll drink all your beer.

The church I went to did not use wine for communion. Grape juice only. Because every single word of the King James Version is the literal inspired word of God.

Every single word.

Except "wine". They meant Jesus turned the water into grape juice.

ETA: I wish they'd name the church - I grew up in Dallas and visited a lot of Baptist churches. Just curious if I know his drinkin' hangout.

I wonder what happened in his life to put him there at that particular time. I am not a country fan but had several of his albums in the 80's. I hope he gets help if he needs it.

I was immediately reminded of Glen Campbell's brush with the law. Glen turned his life around, hopefully Randy will do it as well.

they didn't even have an open container law. That was quite a while ago of course but there was a time when I could legally drive with an open can of beer. Long as I wasn't drunk.

The singer, who lives in the small town of Tioga near Sanger, apologized in a statement to The Associated Press "for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl."

Travis, who launches a concert tour Friday, says he's "committed to being responsible and accountable."

Best not to feed stereotypes of the genre. There are plenty of examples of Liberals there, too.
