(On edit-- Sorry. Rachel Maddow seems to be devoting a show to discounting beliefs in conspiracies about 911 and recent shootings. The subject line is an old joke.)

(12,158 posts)For anyone who didn't catch Rachel Maddow's show, her first guest was Alice Hoagland, mother of Mark Bingham, who was killed on United flight 93 on 9/11. Ms. Hoagland talked about an accidental meet-up she once had with 9/11 conspiracy theorists, and expressed her disdain for conspiracy theories in general.

(6,095 posts)message for Rachael Maddow:
It's a big mistake to lump all "conspiracy" theories together and especially ALL the different ones associated with 911. To believe the official story is worse than the realistic "other" theories. The real thing to do is to ask, not conspire, but ask pertinent questions such as why did building 7 fall after only being hit with debris from another burning building and why did all of the buildings fall at free-fall speed? You can ask these questions without making up your own theory. There is a group that is actually asking the physics questions. The group is made up of dozens of educated architects and physicists. Not all "conspiracies" are the same and you should know that.

(1,732 posts)There are lots of well-educated, rational, people who are skeptical of the official reasons given for the collapse of the Twin Towers, as well as Building 7, and lumping us all in with all "conspiracy nuts" is quite disappointing, especially coming from her.

(9,314 posts)theorists. All conspiracy theorists should not be lumped together into a single group. The reason why there are so many is due to the fact it has been proven in the past our Government is quite capable of participating in a conspiracy. I am going to choose a safe example to prove my point: Watergate.

(9,997 posts)Specifically, the Popular Mechanics book debunking many of the conspiracy theories. Perhaps some of the answers you seek are already in there.
As to architechts and physicists, I am well acquainted with both. Architechts are half-fast engineers ( I say this with love ), but much of their training has to do with human factors and regulatory issues. Physicists - most of the ones I've run into have to keep telling you how smart they are, and they are a poor substitute for an engineer.
Finally - Anyone who beleives in wide-ranging, airtight criminal conspiracies has never been in an illicit conspiracy.

Why and how did the buildings fall? Professionals in commercial construction can't explain it except as controlled demolition.

(11,076 posts)Did she bother to ask the sane 911 families what they thought of the 911 commission and report? I Thought she was intelligent but no more. That was the most ignorant show I have ever seen. Even Rush knows he's being an ass for money. What the heck do they have on Rachel that would cause her to embarrass herself like that.
I am done with her!

(1,893 posts)Conflating crackpot theories about Boston with wholly justified skepticism of the ludicrous government version of 9/11 is irrational, plain and simple. But for someone in her position to even hint at such a thing would be career-damaging, if not career-ending. I have no respect for her, but then I have no respect for any of the prominent TV talking heads.
CrawlingChaos
(1,893 posts)Wow, worse than I thought. She starts out with a lengthy and gushing infomercial for the 9/11 Commission Report (and it's companion comic book, which she just looooves) and the infamously imbecilic Popular Mechanics 9/11 debunking book. The 9/11 Commission Report for crissakes. A work of BushCo fiction whose own commissioners declared they were "set up to fail". But Rachel wants to assure you that the Bushies served up nothing but truthfulness. And if you don't accept that, she clearly implies that you're on par with kooks who deny that the Aurora and Sandy Hook shootings ever happened? Disgusting.
I didn't make it all the way through - making me too angry - so I didn't see Mark Bingham's mother. Presumably Rachel thumbs her nose at the very large number of 9/11 families who aren't willing to quietly swallow the BS and demand a real investigation. She's essentially calling them kooks? But not to their faces, I'm sure, because I doubt she'd ever allow them on her show.

(2,770 posts)And it has not even a remote resemblance to the way you've described it.
napoleon_in_rags
(3,991 posts)Yeah, even the conspiracy community calls the "no one died at Sandy Hook" crowd insane, and they post pictures of vague celebrity look-alikes in the crowd as evidence of "actors". Its pure insanity. At the same time, 70% of the population believes in Kennedy Assassination cover-ups. Conspiracy is a crime, on the books. Its on the books for a reason. All the 20's mafia guys were involved in incredibly well documented criminal conspiracies for instance so you really have to take the whole spectrum in.
But when she bashes the politicization of it by main stream players, I think she's on the right track. I think both parties should leave it alone. Its amazing they don't, I can't imagine the Republicans wanting their brand tied to rants about UFOs and psychic dreams... but also the right has an emerging dialectic, between Rove on one hand and the Paul (more conspiracy oriented) side on the other - and dialectics are appealing, one wants to identify with one side or the other. The more intense the dialectic, the moreso.
She's almost tottering on the edge of a trap. The knee jerk reaction to conspiracy theories is to scream at them all... To scream "there are no conspiracies already!" But that's basically tantamount to saying "creepy things don't happen". Betting the validity of your arguments on the assertion that creepy things don't happen is a bad bet, especially when you are sitting across the table from these folks.

(11,076 posts)....And that many 911 families spoke out against the commission at that time, also, the attitude of the mother of the victim was totally bizarre. Both of the them mocked anyone who did not gobble the entire message hook line and sinker! Yes the commission was so efficient they even made a comic book! What an insult to the seriousness of the topic.
We have been noticing that Rachel's style has really changed over the past year. She repeats and talks like she is speaking to idiots. We can't really watch her on a regular basis. I have emailed my observations to her but ...no response.
I have been meaning to go back and watch an old sow to compare just how far she has gone. I felt sad when I watched this last night. We have really lost am observer and gained nothing. So sad!

(3,102 posts)Sandy Hook ever happened is not only bad and very lazy "journalism," but just downright unethical.
Rachel showed her true colors when she gave Cory Booker a national platform to dig himself out of the hole he'd dug himself into.
I'm not surprised she's carrying water for a government commission.

(17,865 posts)the 911 conspiracy theorists are the same as the Sandy Hook and Aurora conspiracy theorists. I agree they are all kooks, they just aren't the same kooks.
peace13
(11,076 posts)As far as 911 goes, I would reserve judgment on the kooks. Time will tell. Unfortunately, Rachel has shown what happens with time. People do not remember the particulars and history is rewritten. The 911 commission was pretty much deemed a farce by many 911 families at the time of its work. Now it is up to those people to address this ugly issue again and then again and then again.
I have my doubts about 911 and I would not call myself a kook. Feel free to have your thoughts on the subject. ...I won't call you kooky although my guess is if you were me you would!

(11,076 posts)She has lost it in the delivery department and now she disgraces herself with the 911 bull. Using the 911 report as fact while ignoring all of the information that disputed it was pretty unreal. Also, sighting one source in favor of the buildings dropping while disregarding all other reports is pretty irresponsible.
I don't care what her thoughts are on 911, but to lump 911 in with these other attacks is really less than ethical.
We were Rachel's biggest fans, loved her on KO and have watched her show nightly but over the past six months she has become insufferable with just what you described. We have even written her about the problem. finally we have turned her off to save our sanity. If not for DU I would have not seen this. My curiosity was peaked and so we turned in on.
After her ignorance about 911 and professing that folks who think differently than she does are nuts....well, I think we are done too!
