Sheriff's investigation says bullying didn't drive 13-year-old Maine girl to suicideDaily Mail
2 May 2013
According to the Waldo County Sheriff's Department, there simply wasn't evidence to support the family's claim that bullying played a significant role in McGuire's suicide.
'Interviews with family, friends and the school failed to provide any specific instances of bullying at the school,' chief deputy Jeff Trafton said.
But McGuire's grandfather, Fred McGuire, isn't convinced.
'I still think (bullying) was a main part of this whole thing,' he told the Portland Press Herald.
He said that he raised her as if she were his own daughter.
McGuire's body was discovered at her home on March 26.
Relatives and friends said she was harassed at school because she was questioning her sexual identity and expressed herself by dressing in black and trying new looks with her hair and makeup.
Trafton said more details of the investigation would not be made public.
'There is too much personal information that is sensitive to the family, and much of it also involves the accounts of witnesses that were minors,' he said.
Though police said they found no specific incidents, Fred McGuire said he can recall one from earlier this year while Kitty was on the bus.
'Kitty questioned her sexual identity and some kids started calling her names. One of them kicked her in the shin, and when they did, she punched him,' he said.
Both her and the boy were taken to a school counselor, told to apologize, and the incident was called a fight.

Kids are mean, especially at that age. They don't like 'different'.
Piss poor investigation. They should be ashamed.
Poor girl, so sad. We're killing our children, so much of this behavior is learned at home.

(5,279 posts)I also believe, from the information available, that bullying was a significant factor in the young lady's death. I think several things have to be addressed about bullying.
1. Give a universal skill set to withstand teasing and bullying. I see teasing as bullying without the malicious intent.
2. Give a standard, a line in the sand, where bullying starts.
3. Try to build a school social system that fosters cooperation over cliques.
4. Get parents on board, not through threats, but making them welcome into the system.
5. Get humanity to focus on our commons instead of our differences.
Good Luck, and I sincerely mean that. I'll help, but I'm not sure how to.
