CBC: Thousands of Sunni Muslims fled a Syrian coastal town Saturday, a day after reports circulated

that dozens of people, including children, had been killed by pro-government gunmen in the area, activists said.

The reported exodus from Banias came after activists said Friday that regime troops and gunmen from nearby Alawite areas beat, stabbed and shot dozens of people in the Sunni Muslim village of Bayda, 50 kilometres east of Banias.

About 4,000 people were seen fleeing from the Mediterranean city of Banias, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Many in the coastal town report that pro-government gunmen were on Friday targeting people living in Sunni neighbourhoods. Several thousand people are fleeing the Syrian coastal city of Banias, activists say.

The Sunni majority forms the backbone of the rebellion, while President Bashar al-Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam, anchors the regime's security services and the military's officer corps. Other minorities, such as Christians, largely support Assad or stand on the sidelines, worried that the regime's fall would bring about a more Islamist rule.

Everyone has heard "Are you with Assad or are you with the terrorists?" It is not supposed to read "Are you with Assad and his terrorists or with the other side and their terrorists?" We know the Shia fear reprisals if the opposition wins. It looks like the majority Sunni have reason to fear reprisals if Assad wins.

doing other things than protecting Syrian air space? I bet most Syrians thought that's what those MIGs were for.

is just one big mess. It does not just involve fighting in Syria but also in Lebanon and Iraq. Israel struck an operation sending weapons to Hezbullah. Assad has allies. It is not just him and the Alawites but also the Shia populations of Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. The Sunnis are backed by their Allies in different countries. Then you have the Kurds with their main interests in Turkey and Iraq.

Israel has enemies in all those countries. It will be Hezbullah today and Hamas tomorrow. And the U.S. has no clue. There is information that Hezbullah has some 65,000 fighters and over 50,000 missiles already, targeted at Israeli cities while both their operatives and Iranian operatives are secretly operating with Shia militias in Iraq totaling about the same number of fighters. Iran's secret intelligence forces are doing the same mission the CIA is doing. The reports of a high ranking military officer, with the rank of major General, assassinated in Syria should give an indication. That officer was head of a special forces unit in Iran's Revolutionary Guards. The indication is both sides are taking this War seriously. They want U.S. soldiers in there. The opposition those in the U.S. speak of arming, is not united. You don't see the British rushing to get in there. There is no doubt Israel's security is seriously threatened but it will be even more so once the fighting among the Arabs ceases and a winner is declared.

The most serious threat though, are the Iranian backed forces because Iran is the most powerful military force in the Middle East next to Israel. The key is talks with Iran. The U.S. and Israel both hates that idea. Iran has been in secret talks with North korea and planning to get involved more with Pakistan. The U.S. main interest is protecting Israel. I do not think you will solve it with bombs.
